Reverb-drenched and bittersweet, Alvvays members Molly Rankin and Kerri MacLellan were childhood friends, who began playing music with Alec O'Hanley while in high school. Lead vocalist Molly Rankin is the daughter of John Morris Rankin from the popular Canadian folk family group the Rankin Family. Molly Rankin released a solo EP titled "She EP" in 2010 and then in 2011 formed Alvvays with MacLellan, O'Hanley, and new members Brian Murphy and Phil MacIsaac.
Following tours with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Peter Bjorn and John, the group recorded a full-length album, Alvvays, which was released by Royal Mountain Records (Canada), Polyvinyl Records (US), and Transgressive Records (Europe) in July 2014. Chad VanGaalen, John Agnello, and Graham Walsh of Holy Fuck all contributed to the album's production. Simon Vozick-Levinson, writing in Rolling Stone, called the eponymous album an "indie-pop wonder". Alvvays went to #1 on US college charts on August 5, 2014.

You're stuffed with insulation
Just strawberry ice cream floating
With a sprinkle of indignation
Cherry under knot of shoestring
Conflate and agitate
You're a plimsoll punk
And you're gettin' me down, gettin' me down, gettin' me down
Gettin' me down down down, you're gettin' me down
Gettin' me down, gettin' me down, gettin' me down
Plimsoll punk
Your posture's blocking out any possible light
I can hardly see
This conversation spirals into a fight
I can barely breathe
Who ran from Roman candles
Underneath a willow weeping?
Do the tealights on your mantle
Illuminate that summer feeling?
You're the seashell in my sandal
That's slicing up my heel
You're a plimsoll punk
You're a plimsoll punk
And you're getting me down, gettin' me down, gettin' me down
Gettin' me down down, down you're gettin' me down
R-r-r-racking my brain, trying to escape, getting me down
Plimsoll punk
Plimsoll punk
Your posture's blocking out any possible light
I can no longer see
This conversation spirals into a fight
I can barely breathe
Gettin' me down, gettin' me down, you're gettin' me down
Gettin' me down down down, you're gettin' me down
Gettin' me down, gettin' me down, you're gettin' me down

Plimsoll punks
The lyrics to Alvvays's song Plimsoll Punks is all about the internalized anger and frustration that builds up inside someone until they eventually lash out. When the singer "chip[s] through your candy coating" it's a metaphor for cutting through the superficial exterior of a person to reveal their true self. The line "You're stuffed with insulation, just strawberry ice cream floating, with a sprinkle of indignation" speaks to how people hide their emotions and thoughts behind neutrality, but in reality, they are full of unresolved feelings. The "plimsoll punk" refers to someone who is just going through the motions of life, pretending to be happy and carefree while suppressing their emotions, like a shoe with a plimsoll sole.
The song highlights the difficulties and strains of having a close relationship with someone who is afraid to open up or communicate effectively. The lyrics "Your posture's blocking out any possible light, I can hardly see" and "This conversation spirals into a fight, I can barely breathe" express the frustration of trying to have a conversation and connect with someone who doesn't want to let their guard down. The lines "R-r-r-racking my brain, trying to escape, getting me down" convey the struggle to escape a cycle of conflict and negative emotions.
