Reverb-drenched and bittersweet, Alvvays members Molly Rankin and Kerri MacLellan were childhood friends, who began playing music with Alec O'Hanley while in high school. Lead vocalist Molly Rankin is the daughter of John Morris Rankin from the popular Canadian folk family group the Rankin Family. Molly Rankin released a solo EP titled "She EP" in 2010 and then in 2011 formed Alvvays with MacLellan, O'Hanley, and new members Brian Murphy and Phil MacIsaac.
Following tours with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Peter Bjorn and John, the group recorded a full-length album, Alvvays, which was released by Royal Mountain Records (Canada), Polyvinyl Records (US), and Transgressive Records (Europe) in July 2014. Chad VanGaalen, John Agnello, and Graham Walsh of Holy Fuck all contributed to the album's production. Simon Vozick-Levinson, writing in Rolling Stone, called the eponymous album an "indie-pop wonder". Alvvays went to #1 on US college charts on August 5, 2014.

A place where there are no tears, it is just water floating
No, they're not quite emoting
I dream of the other days, of the times I held you
Left in an autumn blaze, now I idle in bubbles
Just collecting the rubble
And I've painted all these pictures of Earth, but that's unusual
Unusual to you
Met at a seminar, shared the same table
Brushed by you at the bar, didn't match your description
It soon became my prescription
I think of the junipers in the spring growing
Fall upon the Jupiter, it doesn't draw a reaction
Temporary distraction
And I've waited for you out here, but that may be delusional
And I've painted all these pictures of Earth, but that's unusual
Unusual to you
Unusual, unusual, unusual to you
And I waited for forever, and that was just delusional
So I've painted all these pictures of Earth, but that's unusual
Unusual, unusual, unusual to you
The song "Red Planet" by Alvvays can be interpreted as an introspective reflection on a failed relationship. The opening line, "It's been almost twenty years on the red planet," suggests a sense of time passing slowly and stagnancy. The reference to the red planet could symbolize a barren and lifeless environment, reflecting the emptiness of the singer's emotional state. The line "A place where there are no tears, it is just water floating" suggests a detachment from feeling and emotion. The following line "No, they're not quite emoting" further emphasizes this sense of disconnection.
The singer then reflects on memories of the past, "I dream of the other days, of the times I held you, Left in an autumn blaze, now I idle in bubbles, Just collecting the rubble." This suggests a yearning for a time when the relationship was flourishing, but now they are left with nothing but the remnants of what was once beautiful.
The chorus "And I've waited for you out here, but that was just delusional, And I've painted all these pictures of Earth, but that's unusual" suggests that their longing for the past is futile and that it's time to move on. The singer acknowledges that their idea of the relationship was perhaps not rooted in reality, and therefore, they were delusional to think things would change. The line "And I've painted all these pictures of Earth, but that's unusual" further suggests that their perspective on life is different from others, perhaps indicating a sense of loneliness or isolation.

This song hits home for me right now feeling like I'm in a relationship but on a different planet entirely.....good to know somebody has been there. I'm sure it's a similar situation for her. Sometimes life, work, interests, just take you in different directions but you still have that bond and love and even if you feel world's apart.....you still wanna wait

Yeah exactly

This reminds me of dying. Like a song they would play in my earphones into the "ending_fire."

I love this so much, its such a cool song. I could listen to this all day and spiral off into some deep daze for awhile. Thank you for making music that says something more.
