Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they may keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, noel, noel, noel
Born is the king of Israel!
They looked up and saw a star
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, noel, noel, noel
Born is the king of Israel!
Then entered in those wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in his presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, noel, noel, noel
Born is the king of Israel!
Noel, noel, noel, noel
Born is the king of Israel!
The First Noel is a classic Christmas carol that tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. It begins with the announcement of the angels to the shepherds in the fields that the Savior has been born. The lyrics reflect the humble beginnings of this holy event, as the angels appear to poor shepherds instead of kings or nobles. The use of repetition in the chorus emphasizes the magnitude of the birth of the King of Israel.
The second verse describes the star that led the wise men from the East to the manger where Jesus lay. The star is a symbol of hope and guidance, leading the wise men to the Savior. The writers of the song skillfully use imagery and metaphor in these lyrics to depict the power and majesty of the event.
The final verse talks about the wise men giving their gifts of gold, myrrh, and frankincense to the baby Jesus. These gifts have symbolic meanings, with gold representing kingship, myrrh representing death and sacrifice, and frankincense representing divinity. The repetition of “Noel” at the end of each verse and in the chorus underscores the joy and celebration of the news of Jesus’ birth.
The First Noel is a traditional Christmas carol that has been around for centuries, and its message remains relevant and inspiring today. It is a beautiful expression of the mystery and awe of the Christmas story, as well as a testament to the importance of faith and hope during the holiday season.
