Shake It Out
Amaia Romero Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Regrets collect like old friends
Here to relive your darkest moments
I can see no way, I can see no way
And all of the ghouls come out to play
And every demon wants his pound of flesh
But I like to keep some things to myself
I like to keep my issues drawn
But it′s always darkest before the dawn

And I've been a fool and I′ve been blind
I can never leave the past behind
I can see no way, I can see no way
I'm always dragging that horse around
Our love is pastured, such a mournful sound
Tonight I'm gonna bury that horse in the ground
So I like to keep my issues drawn
But it′s always darkest before the dawn

Shake it out, shake it out
Shake it out, shake it out, woah
Shake it out, shake it out
Shake it out, shake it out, woah
And it′s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, woah, woah

And I'm damned if I do
And I′m damned if I don't
So here′s to drinks in the dark
At the end of my road
And I'm ready to suffer
And I′m ready to hope
It's a shot in the dark
And right at my throat

Because looking for heaven, found the devil in me (woah)
Looking for heaven, found the devil in me (woah)
Well, what the hell? I'm gonna let it happen to me, yeah (woah)

Shake it out, shake it out
Shake it out, shake it out, woah
Shake it out, shake it out
Shake it out, shake it out, woah

And it′s hard to dance with a devil on your back
So shake him off, woah

Overall Meaning

The song “Shake It Out” by Amaia Romero talks about the struggles we have to face in life, especially when we get stuck in our negative thoughts and regrets. The opening lines “Regrets collect like old friends, here to relive your darkest moments” hint at how memories of past mistakes can haunt us, and how sometimes we just can’t let go of them. Amaia talks about how the demons come out to play and how every demon wants its pound of flesh, which is a metaphor for how negativity can consume us, but we need to keep some things to ourselves despite this. She believes that the darkest hour is just before the dawn which means that we just need to stay hopeful and things will turn around.

The pre-chorus of the song changes when the artist talks about her own experiences. The line “I'm always dragging that horse around, our love is pastured, such a mournful sound” is referencing to when she was in a relationship that was causing her pain and how love can feel like dead weight that she was forced to carry. The chorus serves as a release for all the negative energy that has been building up. We can imagine her saying “Shake it out, shake it out, woah” as she splashes water on her face or dances to her favorite song. The repeated lines “And it's hard to dance with a devil on your back, so shake him off” implies that we need to get rid of all unnecessary negativity and move on from past mistakes. The final lines of the song are about letting things happen to her and taking whatever comes.” looking for heaven, found the devil in me” she’s saying that she’ll take whatever comes her way but is ready for any suffering or struggle to get there.
