Heart-Shaped Box
Amber Mark Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak
I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your Cancer when you turn back

But, hey! Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Yeah
Forever and ever
And ever, yeah

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath

Oh oh, hey! Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Yeah
Forever and ever
And ever

Forever and ever

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Amber Mark's song "Heart-Shaped Box" convey a complex mix of emotions and metaphors. The opening line, "She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak," suggests that the person being referred to is observant, perceptive, and potentially capitalizing on vulnerabilities. The following line, "I've been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks," depicts a sense of entrapment or being emotionally imprisoned by this person. The heart-shaped box metaphor signifies being captured within the confines of a relationship or situation.

The line "I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap" further emphasizes the captivating and potentially destructive nature of the relationship. The magnet symbolizes an irresistible attraction or pull, while the tar pit trap signifies being stuck or immobilized in a detrimental situation. The following line, "I wish I could eat your Cancer when you turn back," introduces a contrast as the singer desires to consume or overcome the emotional cancer within the other person. This line could represent a desire for power or control over the relationship dynamic.

The recurring lines "But, hey! Wait! I've got a new complaint" express a sense of frustration or dissatisfaction with the situation. Being "Forever in debt to your priceless advice" suggests that the singer feels obligated or indebted to the other person, possibly due to their influence or guidance. This may also imply a power imbalance within the relationship.

The lyrics take a different direction with the line "Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet." Here, the metaphor of meat-eating orchids implies an unforgiving nature, refusing to grant forgiveness. The following line, "Cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath," introduces contrasting imagery of delicacy and vulnerability. This juxtaposition suggests that even within a seemingly heavenly or innocent environment, there can still be harmful consequences.

The final repetition of "Forever and ever, and ever" emphasizes a sense of endurance or perpetuity, possibly highlighting the ongoing hardships or challenges faced within this relationship. Overall, "Heart-Shaped Box" delves into themes of entrapment, power dynamics, frustration, and the complexities of emotional connections.

This took balls. She’s probably very aware of how set fans are in their tastes; whether hip hop or rock there are always concrete unspoken rules when it comes to music (e.g. “don’t cover a Nirvana song”). (“Don’t cover a Tupac song”).

But I must say, this is refreshing, it’s very fresh and serene, almost a stark contrast to the signature sound of Nirvana. Sonically speaking, this could be the woman’s side of the lyrical meaning if you want to put it that way. We could interpret this as the “yin” meaning to the originals “yang,” as we’ve speculated that Kurt could’ve possibly made this song about his relationship with Courtney Love. Though the lyrics could be analyzed as a love hate relationship, the sonic direction of the original portrays a negative image of the lyrics, whereas this version romanticizes the idea of a love with risks and burdens. Gosh, makes me want to listen to the original as well as replay this cover. Good job Amber Mark ☺️ you’ve sold this rock fan lol

people out there complaining about a cover, wich is always supposed to not to sound EXACTLY like the original because what would be the point, right? incredible voice, incredible instrumentals, will definitely vibe a lot listening to this :)

@Caleb Watkins How very objective of you to say. And just because it doesn't have guitars doesn't make it a pop song.

Caleb Watkins

The song isn’t a pop song it doesn’t work

Thank you! I've been saying this for the longest time.. the only truly useless covers are the ones that faithfully recreate the original because the covering artist is too afraid to change the feel, usually out of their respect (or more often fan-worship) for the original artist.

If you're going to go to the effort of covering and releasing then make your mark on it. Do it different and convincingly. And why does there have to be a better one? Sure people are going to prefer one over the other but can't we just say that Nirvana's original is a brooding emotional masterpiece but Amber's is just damn groovy and actually does sound like an Amber Mark song? IMO they're both wicked versions.
