A real treat for the ears and eyes of this Anglophile! There's something about English dance music, as exemplified by Ambrose and of course Ray Noble, that I just love -- it's so different from American pop of the period but, in its own way, equally charming, with a marvelous rhythm. Britain of those days exuded an incomparable sophistication, as shown in your shots, as well as a very endearing homeyness -- I love both qualities.

Lovely comment thank you. I'm a Brit who adores our 30s dance band music. I always loved music from the 30s but I only knew American music, and didn't know we had such great bands and singers until last April when I discovered Al Bowlly and Ray Noble. Lew Stone, Roy Fox, Ambrose etc. How exciting it was for me! Incidentally it was because I was listening to Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman a lot that YouTube recommended Al to me. Thank you YouTube! Have you heard "Who Walks In When I Walk Out" by Ray Noble? It's amazing!

@@mabel8179 Another truly sweet sound was from Carroll Gibbons and the Savoy Hotel Orpheans. If anything, I rate them the best orchestra of all but they couldn't surpass Ray Noble for one reason: they didn't have Al Bowlly as their main singer!

Thank you! The photo material from London of the 1930s is so rich, it wasn't a big problem to select right visuals. I love the lady with a leopard! she is very much a Belgravia or Knightsbridge type of the era.

I always wonder what makes the Ambrose Band so great. Lots of things. A driving rhytm, energy etc. But especially the brass section is, I suspect, way ahead of many of its contemporaries!

It was supposed to be the superlative caliber of musicians, arrangers etc. that Ambrose always employed, he only wanted the BEST - he was said to be a perfectionist (and thank goodness for that!)....Also he apparently went essentially for JAZZ MUSICIANS - something which is also supposed to be a major factor of his SUPERIOR SOUND, setting him apart from all the rest!😃😃😃....

Hello Grzegorz - I love this Swing since Swing - has always been my favorite dance - right after the Tango. The hats you presented in your visuals - look sensational. I should be dancing Swing and Tango this coming Tuesday - since the Chicago's oppressive heat - has prevented me from going to my most favorite dance studio but the cooler days are starting - tomorrow. Dear Ron, how well I can understand, what you feel! This steady hot tropical weather has been killing us through last almost two weeks now. At nights we get alarmed by sudden cavalcades of thunders and lightnings across the dry sky, then - also unexpectedly - flood of a nightmarish rainfall which lasts 1/2 hour and then, in the moprning : a tropical dry heat again. Last time I experienced something similar in Dominican Republic. And, on contrary to Americans, we have no AC in our flats!

Maurice Chevalier was once asked, where he'd like to have been again, were it possible fior him to step backwards in time. He said: "nothing ever compares two places: New York in the Charleston era and Swinging London of the 1930s!" This suddenly reminds me of Aunt Augusta from Graham Greene's Travels With My Aunt - asked by her nephew the similar kind of question, she put "Havana, before Castro" on the first place of her list. :-))

The early 1930s line for ladies was vertical: a long silken gown with a small head on the top, plus enormous hat. I remember one film about elegant fashions store in prewar Warsaw, where the managing lady, who was controlling her staff girls - busy with setting the right hats on the right heads of the customers - repeated: Small heads, girls, remember, only small heads are worn in this season!

Thanks for your essential correction to what is commonly and imprecisely considered as "British Swing". Certainly, this what plays here Bert Ambrose belongs to a kind of hot dance music of early 1930s - genuinely, a British invention!

It wasn't yet true swing, but the great British bands already had a 4/4 rhythm while most American band still were playing in 2/4 (the Oompah aka polka rhythm)

The rhythm section plays different than on a swing arrangement. Especially the drumming. Unfortunately when swing became the rage this kind of music ceased to exist.
