Willow Weep For Me
Ambrose and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Willow weep for me,
Willow weep for me
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to my plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for me
Gone my lovely dreams
Lovely summer dreams
Gone and left me here
To weep my tears along the stream
Sad as I can be
Hear me willow and
Weep for me

Whisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
To leave my heart a sign
And crying alone
Murmur to the night
And hide her starry light
So none will find me sighing
Crying all alone

Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to me plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for me

Whisper to the wind
And say that love has sinned
To leave my heart a sign
And crying alone
Murmur to the night
And hide her starry light
So none will find me sighing
Crying all alone

Weeping willow tree
Weep in sympathy
Bend your branches down
Along the ground and cover me
Listen to my plea
Hear me willow and
Weep for me

Overall Meaning

The opening line of “Willow Weep for Me” is the title of the song and is repeated throughout the song. It’s as though the singer is pleading for the willow tree to feel his pain and commiserate with his sorrow. The use of the willow tree is a symbol of mourning and grief, which is a common theme in blues and jazz music.

The second verse of the song talks about the loss of dreams, specifically summer dreams, which is a metaphor for lost love. The singer of the song is asking the willow tree, as a symbol of nature, to listen to his sorrow and weep for him. The willow tree is there to provide comfort and solace, much like how nature can be a source of comfort in difficult times.

The final verse of the song is a plea for the willow tree to weep in sympathy for the singer’s pain. The singer urges the willow to bend down its branches and cover him, giving him a sense of protection and safety that he is not finding in his relationships. Overall, the song uses the symbol of the willow tree to represent loss and grief, while the singer is looking for comfort and understanding in nature.

I think this should qualify for the description "Tone poem". Absolutely heavenly.

Yes - a masterful arrangement. Where can we find the score?

We take Sam Browne for granted as he recorded prolifically and turned out a consistently high standard of performance. I agree with your comments about him. He must have been inspired by the Orchestra too - what a wonderful performance!

You are indeed right! Sam Browne is FANTASTIC! Ever hear "Moanin` For You" by Ambrose with Sam`s vocal! WOW!

roybo1930

Nick! this is SUPER STAR AWESOME! OH! You can never go wrong with Ambrose & Sam Browne! BEAUTIFUL!

Would I be serving Bert Read a huge injustice by plumping for Sid Phillips as arranger? Great sound who ever, and Sam Browne at his best. Toss up between Stone and Ambrose in this era?

Nick Dellow

I don't think you would be doing Bert Read an injustice, and I am inclinded to agree with you that it is more likely to be a Sid Philips arangement. It has several of his hallmarks, including applying a modern (then) rhythmic style to a ballad and also in some of the section work, especially that of the sax section.
