Larrieux was born and brought up in the neighborhood of Greenwich Village in New York City. Her mother was a dance critic and professor who encouraged Larrieux to grow up in a free-spirited, artistic environment. Many of her influences are drawn from R&B, soul, jazz, folk, hip-hop and gospel, with flashes of Middle Eastern, West African, and Indian ethnic styles. She lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.
As a solo artist, her music is mostly categorized as fitting within the nu-soul genre, though she also dabbles in jazz, blues and gospel sounds. She sang lead vocals with Sade's band Sweetback while Sade was on hiatus. On her last album 'Lovely Standards' she gravitated away from nu-soul to produce a cover album made up of songs from the jazz and blues singers that inspired her. Larrieux is also influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder and Prince β as she has previously credited on her website.
For Real

And don't stop
I can float I can fly to the highest
Mountain top,
I can breathe you, I can drink in your laugh
I can, I can live on your smile I can trip and if I can fall into your arms I can
Stay there my whole life
I can stare; I can memorize your face, your hands, your hair
Every part of you I can cut off any loose ends and not even want to keep a few
I can speak to you so honestly I can't eve run any game
I cam hear a million angels singing in my ears
When I say your name
[Chorus]
I can't smile, can't dream like a child
Can't feel safe in this world without you
I can't go can't disturb this flow
Can't begin to know what I would do
I can't see, can't find strength to be
Rather not be me without you
I can't deal, I can't even feel,
Without you I'm me
[Chorus]
The song "For Real" by Amel Larrieux expresses a deep devotion and dependency on the person she loves. The first verse describes how the singer can do incredible things, like running for hours, floating, and flying, but none of those compare to being close to the person she loves. She can sustain herself on their smile and fall into their arms without ever wanting to leave. The chorus reiterates this dependency, expressing the singer's ability to memorize every detail of their loved one and hear angels sing at the mere mention of their name.
The second verse shows the opposite end of the spectrum, the loss of the loved one, and how it affects the singer. She cannot smile, feel safe, or deal with the chaos of the world without them. She would rather not even be herself if she cannot have the person she loves by her side. This verse highlights the intense pain that comes with losing someone that was a source of so much happiness and comfort.
Overall, "For Real" is a deep and emotional ballad that showcases the power of a love that can make someone feel both invincible and vulnerable.

Amel Larriuexβs music would always be a part of my safe circle. My mom used to play her when I was little. My mom passed a few years ago.
