slave
Amen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I am no one
But not like you
I will burn too
Blinded by the night-time
Out on your play
Running the faith
Shining the fate
Blind eye no mind

What you gonna do to me and what you gonna say to me
I don't wanna hear about all your drama mishap
Running down the willing scenes and I won't suck on
your disease
I don't need no riot gear to roll into the heaven

I am no one
Tied to you
Shine onto me
Blind mind never see
Your thoughts are the whore
Bought what was said
Tied to what you want
To what you want

Bound to what you got to run away and look around
To the money girls running down in your trees
Bound to what you get when you walk around you
Walk around you...Walk around you...Walk around you
Walk around you...Walk around you
It never sees
It never cease
Never cease

Are you too drag? Are you too bad? Gone alone
Gone emblazed Gone and glazed Are you there?
No one No one ever said

You'll never understand you're blind and all alone
You'll never understand you're blind and all alone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Slave" by Amen speak about feeling oppressed and trapped within societal expectations and standards. The opening lines “I am no one, but not like you” directly address the listener and express a sense of alienation from the rest of society. This continues with the lyrics “I will burn too, blinded by the night-time, out on your play” suggesting the singer feels trapped within the system and is struggling to keep up with the pace and demands of the world.

The following verse can be interpreted as the singer’s rejection of all the negativity and drama that an oppressive society forces upon them. The lyrics “I don’t wanna hear about all your drama mishap, Running down the willing scenes and I won’t suck on your disease” allude to the pressures put on individuals by society's expectation to conform and participate.

The chorus “Bound to what you get when you walk around you, It never sees, It never cease, Never cease” talks about how society traps you into a certain way of living that is never-ending. The singer is questioning their place in society “Are you too drag? Are you too bad? Gone alone, gone emblazed, gone and glazed, are you there?”

The lyrics as a whole portray a sense of discontent and a desire to break free from the shackles of societal expectations. The singer feels trapped within an oppressive system and is struggling to cope with the expectations put upon them.

Actually I  am the photographer who shot that CD Cover and Casey & I came up with that idea and shot it and I exhibited it at an art show I had on Melrose Avenue .  The Slayer guys just happened to be at my art show that night  and saw  that shot framed  and displayed and hanging  on the art show wall.  They STOLE the idea and went and recreated it saying SLAYER instead of SLAVE as we had done it.  Caseys  CD cover was already printed and out at this time and then SLAYERS hit the streets which they copied from us. Because Slayer at that time was a bigger band,  it looked like we were the followers  and not the originators. The idea for this image was written up in TIME  magazine as Slayer being the originators and Casey had to pay alotta money to change the artwork on his CD because at that time he looked like the copycat but I  assure you  we were the ones AHEAD OF THE CURVE.  This is a true story and Casey has always been ahead of  the curve, so much so, that Slayer stole shit from him. TRUE STORY.

I'm a big fan of your work and didn't realize that you had a connection to my favorite band. It sucks that that happened, but I still enjoyed reading your story.
