After playing in New York and touring the US and Europe from 2009–2010, in the summer of 2010 McMahon released the Murder Dull Mind EP, a collection of the apartment recordings made while in Beijing, on Sacred Bones. This past January, he began recording for his second full length, Through Donkey Jaw, his first proper recordings in almost five years. Where Murder Dull Mind was sparse, mostly acoustic and almost all first-take improvisation, this new work contains many more fully-realized sounds and songs; it is very much the winter to Murder Dull Mind’s summer.

Na-na-na
Na-na-na
Ee
Ee
Na-na-na
Na-na-na
Yeah, freedom
You'll know the way
You've faded from me
And I will hold you, hold you
Elation
Wasted, dated, patient
Hesitation
Na-na-na
Na-na-na
Yeah, freedom
Freedom
It's cold here, but you came in
He can close his eyes but you know he can't fake it
And I will hold him 'til he's done
So be it, avian, patient
Hesitation
Lover, come here
Lover, come here
Lover, come here
Lover, come here
You've got a beautiful guitar
And there's an ocean where you are
Wherever you run, there you are
Lover, come here
Lover, come here
Na-na-na
Na-na-na
Freedom
Freedom
The lyrics to "Freedom" by Amen Dunes convey a sense of longing, comfort, and liberation. The repetitive "na-na-na" and "ee" sounds create a melodic and hypnotic atmosphere, allowing the listener to immerse themselves in the emotions of the song.
The opening lines, "You'll know the way, You've faded from me," suggest a sense of loss or distance between the singer and someone they cared about. Despite this, there is a yearning to hold onto the connection, to find solace and elation in their presence.
The repetition of the word "freedom" throughout the song emphasizes a desire for liberation, both from emotional burdens and societal constraints. It becomes a mantra, an affirmation of the need for autonomy and the ability to live life on one's own terms.
The verse, "It's cold here, but you came in, He can close his eyes but you know he can't fake it, And I will hold him 'til he's done," suggests the presence of a lover or a comforting figure who provides warmth and understanding. There is a willingness to support and hold onto this person until their journey or struggle is complete.
The lines "You've got a beautiful guitar, And there's an ocean where you are, Wherever you run, there you are" express the idea that beauty and freedom can be found within oneself, regardless of external circumstances or geographical location. It highlights the importance of self-discovery and embracing one's own individuality.
Overall, "Freedom" by Amen Dunes embraces themes of love, longing, and the pursuit of personal liberation. It encourages listeners to find solace within themselves and to seek connection and understanding with others.

Yeah this is something else. I'm not sure what I was expecting, or how it ended up in my "listen to this eventually" playlist, but I'll be damned if it isn't standing out from the crowd. There's just something true here
