in the sea
America/Jimmy Webb Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the sea the fish have learned to fly
On a moonlit night on wings of silver
As the enchanted stars sail serenely by
Do they know where do unicorns go
Where winged horses fly
Narwhales lost at sea and never seen again
Go, go and ask the magpie
Where do unicorns go

In the trees the birds have learned to speak
Gaily colored they keep their secrets
In a parade of clouds playing hide and seek
Do they know where do unicorns go
Where winged horses fly
Narwhales lost at sea and never seen again

Does myth and mystery lie
Where the unicorns go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "The Highwayman" by Jimmy Webb convey the mystical and surreal elements of nature, as well as the questions that humans have about what lies beyond our reality. The first verse sends the listener into a fantastical world where even fish have learned to fly and glide on the silver wings of moonlight. While this departure from reality seems only possible in a dream, the lyric suggests that it may be possible to explore the mysteries of life through the unknown depths of nature.

The second verse takes us to the trees where the birds, now able to speak, keep their secrets hidden from plain sight. The clouds that dance in disguise within the sky may hold the answers to where the unicorns go or where winged horses fly. As humans, we are curious about the hidden elements of life and often search for answers in the unknown. The song leaves room for interpretation, but the message behind the lyrics may be to encourage listeners to embrace mystery and the unknown.

Text
When the last eagle flies
over the last crumbling mountain
And the last lion roars at the last dusty fountain
In the shadow of the forest though she may be old and worn
They will stare unbelieving at the last unicorn

When the first breath of winter
through the flowers is icing
And you look to the north and a pale moon is rising
And it seems like all is dying and would leave the world to mourn In the distance
hear the laughter of the
last unicorn
I'm alive, I'm alive

When the last moon is cast
over the last star of morning
And the future has passed without even a last desperate warning
Then look into the sky where through the clouds a path is torn
Look and see her how she sparkles, it's the last unicorn
 I'm alive, I'm alive

I first saw it on a laser disk. Lol. Watched it about a 100 times as a kid and then laser disk technology was abandonned for the VHS... then I spent 20 years looking for a VHS copy. It was pre-easy buying on internet days so I had to actually go shopping and look. Anyway, eventually found it. Gotta admit, first time I heard the music again I teared up.

Your favorite of all time or in your top ten of all time. I'm confused.
