Oh What A Life
American Authors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was snow
There was snow, stretched for miles and more
Where we buried
Where we buried our souls

Oh I long, oh I long for them days
Left and gone
Where we sang and where danced
To a brighter song

But now I look upon a field with bodies stretched out
And I feel nothing
But something's burning in my soul, I let it lose control
And I'm in, oh God I've sinned

But I tried so hard and we tried so hard
And it's a long, long road that you told me, so
Yeah I tried so hard to forget where we are
And all we do is laugh and we sing

Woo woo and we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

Woo woo and we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life
And we laughed and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

But I tried so hard, but we killed our hearts
In valleys low, I hear the trumpets blow
Ya I tired so hard, yet I'm lost and scared
And I'm filled with regret, yet I sing

Woo woo and we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh what a life
Woo woo and we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

And we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

And we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

Woo woo and we laughed oh and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

And we laughed and we cried
And thought, oh, what a life

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of American Authors' song Oh What A Life convey a sense of longing for the carefree days of the past. The first stanza describes the memory of a snowy landscape where the singers buried their souls. The imagery of snow can symbolize a clean slate, a pure departure from the mundane. The chorus echoes this sentiment with the repetition of the phrase "and we laughed oh and we cried, and thought, oh what a life."

However, the second stanza presents a darker tone that contrasts with the lightness of the chorus. It describes a field with bodies stretched out, suggesting the aftermath of a battle or a tragedy. The singer feels nothing, but "something's burning in [their] soul," hinting at the internal turmoil caused by the memory. The lines "I tried so hard and we tried so hard" convey a sense of regret for putting so much effort into something that ended up killing their hearts. Still, the chorus repeats, and the song ends on a bittersweet note of reminiscence.

The song's lyrics are a reflection on the bittersweet nature of life's experiences, with the good times often contrasted with the difficult ones. The song's message is conveyed by the upbeat melody and smooth vocals, which create a sense of nostalgia that few listeners can resist.

There was snow, there was snow
Stretched for miles and more
Where we buried, where we buried
Our souls

Oh I long, Oh I long
For them days left and gone
Where we sang and where we danced to a brighter song

But now I look upon a field with bodies stretched out and I feel nothing
But something's burning in my soul I let it lose control and I'm in

Oh God I've sinned
But I tried so hard, and we tried so hard
And it's a long long road, that you told me so
Yeah I tried so hard, to forget where we are

And all we do is laugh and we sing
And we laughed oh, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life

And we laughed oh, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life
And we laughed, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life

But I tried so hard, but we killed our hearts
In valleys low, I hear the trumpets blow
Yeah, I tried so hard, yet I'm lost and scarred

And I'm filled with regret yet I sing
And we laughed oh, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life
And we laughed oh, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life
And we laughed, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life
And we laughed oh, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life.
And we laughed oh, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life.
And we laughed, and we cried and thought
Oh, what a life.

This is the kind of song I want my children to grow up with and love. That whenever they hear it, it'll remind them of their childhood. Basically, what i'm saying is that this song is timeless and deverves more recognition.
