Since I Don't Have You
American Graffiti Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I don't have hopes and dreams
I don't have anything
Since I don't have you
And I don't have fond desires
And I don't have happy hours
I don't have anything
Happiness and I guess I never will again
When you walked out on me
In walked ol' misery
And he's been here since then
I don't have love to share
And I don't have one who cares
I don't have anything
Since I don't have you
You
You
You
....
The lyrics of the song "Since I Don't Have You" from American Graffiti reflect the emptiness and loneliness that the singer feels after losing their love interest. The first two lines express that the singer has no plans or hopes anymore since the person they had been dreaming of is no longer with them. The third and fifth lines mirror this sentiment of having nothing, emphasizing the vacuum that their absence has created in the singer's life. The singer further reveals that they have lost their fond desires, happy moments and love for anything in life, as their partner's absence has left a bottomless pit of despair.
The second half of the song focuses on how the loss of the love has made the singer utterly unhappy. The lyric "Happiness and I guess I never will again" highlights that the singer believes that they will never attain joy in life after being left by their love interest. The line "In walked ol' misery" refers to the emotional pain and suffering that the singer experiences after significant emotional loss, and the subsequent line 'and he's been here since then' highlights that the hurt has been persistent and pervasive. The last stanza repeats the same sentiment of having nothing in life without the beloved partner, with emphasis on the fact that the singer has no love or anyone to care since they lost their supposed soulmate.

I have been listening to this song since I was a teenager and it still brings chills. "Since I Don't Have You" is the epitome of what 50's music was all about.
It is, simply, the most beautiful, well-performed song of that era.
