In 2005, Amerie burst back onto the music scene with her fourth single "1 Thing", which was used as the theme song for the Will Smith movie "Hitch". "1 Thing" went to the top of the charts in various international markets, including the US, UK and others around the world. It earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance (the album "Touch" was also nominated for the "Best Contemporary R&B Album" Grammy ). The album sold an estimated 800,000 copies worldwide and went gold in the US and silver in the UK.
Amerie's third album 'Because I Love It' was released in the UK , Europe and Asia in 2007. The single "Take Control" was released in October 2006, and it enjoyed international success. The second single "Gotta Work" did not fare as well in the charts, despite receiving heavy airplay on UK and European music video channels. The album has sold a combined total of 310,000 copies worldwide and is her most critically acclaimed album.
In late 2007, was reported that Amerie had left her label Columbia Records, and signed with the Island Def Jam Music Group.
Amerie revealed the album title to be changed from 'Breakups To Makeups' to 'In Love & War'. Amerie also announced that her first single off the album will be titled "Why R U?" produced by The Buchanans. The single premiered online in the week of May 11th and received fairly mixed reviews. The track itself is even compared to Mary J. Blige's "What's The 411?" and "My Life" album, because of the old school feel.
Amerie changed her artist name to Ameriie (extra I) in 2010. She said that it gave her more positive energy as an artist. She changed her artist name back to Amerie (without the extra I) with the double EP releases '4AM Mulholland' and 'After 4AM' in 2018.
Right now her main focus is on books, youtube channel and her son and husband.

Hey, Hey
When I was younger girl nobody told me about the facts of life.
I was living in the clouds I didn't think about whats wrong or right.
So I didn't understand that playing games is what some people do.
I swore I didn't start my life until the day I fell in love with you.
Do you feel like a man?
Cause you've got my heart in your hands.
And you took me high as you can,
Higher just to drop me off.
Tell me did it make you feel good?
(Ha) Treating me the way you would. (Ha)
Cause you took me high as you could.
Higher just to drop me off.
When I was a younger girl nobody told me I would have to fight.
To keep my sanity I couldn't love because I'd lose my sight.
So mostly everything you did is send another gift you broke my heart.
Until you came around again, and I was right back at the very start.
And you kept taking me higher just to drop me off
Do you feel like a man? Cause you've got my heart in your hands.
And you took me high as you can, higher just to drop me off.
Tell me did it make you feel good? (Ha) Treating me the way you would. (Ha)
Cause you took me high as you could. Higher just to drop me off.
Higher just to drop me
Let's go.
Does it make you feel good to know broke me that's what people say.
Does it make you feel good you broke me down. (Uh)
I give you all I have, till there's nothing left,
And all the time I spent, I can't get that back so
I think of what to do,
What I wish I knew,
How to keep away from you. (Hey hey hey)
So do you feel like a man?
Cause you've got my heart in your hand.
And you took me high as you can, higher just to drop me off.
Higher, higher, higher, you take me higher just to drop me off.
(hey, hey, hey hey hey, hey, hey, hey hey hey)
Tell me did it make you feel good? (Ha)
Treating me the way you would. (Ha)
Cause you took me high as you could.
Higher just to drop me off.
The lyrics to Amerie's song "Higher" reflect a young woman's journey through love and heartbreak. The first verse describes her early innocence and naivety, with no understanding of the "facts of life." She emphasizes her lack of awareness of people's deceptive tendencies and how they use others for their own gain. However, once she falls in love, she feels like her life has truly started, and she is taken on a high ride by her lover, only to be dropped off once again. The chorus then questions the man's motives, asking if he takes pleasure in treating her this way and breaking her heart repeatedly.
The second verse details the emotional toll this constant cycle of love and heartbreak takes on her. She admits that she had to fight to keep her sanity and couldn't fully experience love, as it would result in losing her sight of reality. Despite everything he does, she keeps going back to him and the cycle starts again. The bridge touches on the regret of everything she has given him, all the time and energy, and how she can't get it back. She's left with the realization that she needs to figure out a way to move on from him and keep away.
Overall, the lyrics to "Higher" are a poignant reflection on the complexities of love and how it can both elevate and devastate an individual. It's a reminder of the pain that comes with breaking away from toxic relationships and learning to value oneself.
