@4Leaf Toy Review you make a great point, driving it makes the most sense in a dense city center, while OWNING it only makes sense in a more spread out suburb. It works sufficiently in certain places that have already either restricted access to conventional vehicles and or have already catered to vehicle that are intermediary between bicycles and conventional vehicles ( certain communities that have a large amount of walking tourism , small New England islands , waterfront property etc, weekend cabin communities, etc, some communities in more temperate areas with side roads for small vehicles

The problem is this simple assumption that either this vehicle will become wildly popular enough to forces Community wide changes, or community leaders will become enamored with it to the point they will be politically able to force its adoption by heavily restricting conventional vehicles.

I keep hearing “well you are not the targeted customer ”, this is true but it is spoken with the assumption that the target customer IS large enough to forces these changes. If that were true it would already be happening on a large scale.

It’s the assumption of inevitability that based more on wish fulfillment

Over here in France there is a class of vehicle called a "Non permis" - a vehicle that you can drive without a driving licence; so if you've never had a licence, or been banned from driving for any reason, or too young to have a car licence - the non permis car fits the bill.

The Citroen Ami has been designed and built to sell to fleet operators in larger cities where congestion and pollution is at it's worst. IT'S NOT A CAR. It's an Urban Utility Vehicle or an UUV.

With a few exceptions, like maybe down town New York City, most city driving is more than 27 mph and messenger cyclist move faster than that so that definitely wouldn’t work there but more along the lines of large university campuses. There’s barely bicycle lanes in many areas forget for vehicles. And even if they had those here for junior-junior, you still have to be 16 for junior operator’s license.

Why does this seem such a brilliant idea even though almost every reviewer thrashes it? Developing that cheap electric vehicle keeping potential customers in mind is a fantastic job.....this is when a car is not a status but practical parking and economical solution for city life.

I think you’ve been a little harsh on this one Matt. It’s been designed as a cheap, very basic option for short journeys / urban driving… and it does that to a perfectly acceptably standard.

It’s the kind of thing that many older people would own as it would be perfect for a short drive to the shops and around town etc.

It’s also the kind of thing that many people would have as a cheap-to-run 2nd car, again for short journeys.

@steven heckert I think you’re overthinking this. It will be perfect for hundred of thousands of people, and not a good choice for everyone else.

The people that it works well for (people in big cities, elderly people that do 1 drive a week to the shops and back, and young people as a cheap option for a first car) will consider it and some will buy, others won’t.

It’s really no more complicated than that 🤷‍♂️

Part of the caveat is the term “urban driving”. I think that definition changes for each person…. Is urban driving New York City, or is it Small town USA ? Once you eliminate all the locations and destinations where either public transportation or a more conventional vehicle is more practical the locations and destinations where this becomes more practical than either public transportation or a more conventional vehicle become very small. And it’s becomes very difficult to live your life with this thing WITHOUT also access to either PT or PVs so having access to this become superfluous. It’s best chance is to exist where small electric vehicles (golf carts) already are established as a significant mode of transportation and have the networks in place to cater to them. Otherwise you either have to simply hope that enough people will buy them to force a change in the way your community is laid out or hope that the community choose to change the way it is laid out and force people to buy these vehicles in large number over conventional vehicles.
The conversion from horse and buggy to automobiles occurred because the automobile offered something the horse and buggy couldn’t duplicate, this doesn’t do that compared to a conventional vehicle as much as people would like to think.

I'm sorry, but your type of comment is what car manufacturers think, and it's thinking that's somewhat disconnected from reality. Because yes, there are a lot of people who drive less than 5 miles a day, but that may only be true for 99 journeys out of 100. As for that 1 journey out of 100, what if you wanted to go somewhere that was 2 miles away on a motorway? Even a conventional small petrol city car like an i10 or an Aygo can easily handle motorway driving, but it's completely out of the question for the Citroen Ami. So what's the point of spending thousands on a car which you can never take out of your own town or city? Why not spend a little bit more, and have a car that can easily handle the occasional journey out of the town/city?

Exactly right! I'm getting old, as a senior and pensioner. I rarely go more than seven kilometres a day. I could easily bypass the faster streets, and it would do me for about 99% of my driving needs. Ugly? No! Funky!

In almost all reviews, Mat gives interesting engaging reviews - this one, it was clear from the start he did not like and sought to expose its limitations. The car is marketed as a cheap city car and in that respect, it meets its objective perfectly. It would be akin to exposing the lack of boot and seat capacity in a Koenigsegg.

@Rose 2 Blossom Well, then maybe just take the drivers license course? I don't know where you are from, but we have something here called "Vertrauensgrundsatz", which would directly translate to something like "confidence/trust principle". It means that in traffic, you can trust that the other participants in traffic know the rules. There are some exceptions like children, animals and persons not in control of their actions, but in general it holds.

Bicycle riders are, up to now, still exempt from it but there are discussions to include them as well - owning to increasing numbers of accidents involving them that spring from blatant disregard or ignorance of basic traffic rules. It only gets more severe with a powered vehicle and four wheels.

I've seen little electric rollers forcing right of way against massive trucks or not knowing about priority rules in traffic and shoot out into an intersection from subordinate traffic. (I've google translated some of those terms because I couldn't find a definitive source on traffic jargon to compare the German equivalent)

Maybe getting acquainted with the regulations and get some training in, your fear of driving will be somewhat alleviated as well. :)

You’re not comparing this car to a muscle car or even a family hatchback, it’s a small, electric car for super short journeys that just might help reduce pollution and contribute to reversing the damage we have caused to the planet.

Unnecessarily salty review.
As others have commented, this is more a micromobility type of vehicle rather than competing directly with other EVs and certainly has its place in congested cities like London.
In France you can lease this for less than £20/month.
It’s an affordable alternative for people who don’t need a full size car but don’t want to use an e-scooter or e-bike.

These reviews are usually very good but this seems to have missed the point. Many will consider purchasing something like this on account of the petrol shortage. For short trips into town this would be ideal and very good value for money. A review on its own terms comparing it to its peers would be helpful!

This thing is awesome! I'd totally use it instead of my current car to go to the shops or around town. I live in a busy city with a lot of traffic jams and barely any parking spots that fit my SUV so this could actually solve a lot of problems around short-distance trips, and when I'm not using it, I reckon it'd fit in the boot of my bigger car :D

I think it's pretty iconic! The references to bygone people's cars (like the window and door openings) combined with the bright accents on the interior. You bring your speaker and smartphone. I wish it had coloured panels on the outside and it would be necessary to know how an accident at its top speed would work out.

@Akos Volenter I can totally appreciate it's not going to be for everyone, yourself included apparently...but nobody is saying 'you' have to buy one. Equally Lamborghini's aren't for everyone, but many of us can still appreciate them. Ultimately this little 'car' WOULD be appropriate for a huge section of society and their average trips around town...yes, even allowing for variations in temperature and charging times etc. Also they're helping to pave the way for other small personal electric vehicles.
You may be unable to accept the changes that are inevitably coming, but just because 'you' hate them doesn't mean 'everyone' will. I'm sure you probably hate electric scooters and think 'everyone hates them' too....and yet, they're selling like hot cakes.

Would the battery keep the charge always the same in freezing and hot weather and what about after 1 year usage is it the same range? Anyway it is maybe ok for someone but definetley not for me LOL. Maybe for the 14 year old kids, however the rest of the roadusers will hate them so basically this car will be the new version of the reliant regal, a joke.

@Akos Volenter Probably best you spend that time working out your maths in future. 20mph for 30 mins before needing to charge implies a 10ml / 16Km range. I suppose if you're gonna simply make up the stats for yourself, anything might sound possible, but it has nothing to do with the practical reality of this little vehicle, especially for the vast majority of trips people undertake for commuting etc.

Awesome ev, speed range ideal for city travel, stop start from lights. Average speed across Aberdeen on a bike. Approx 19mph, including stop and start from traffic management. I would def trial one for a month Matt.

As negative as this review seemed I'm still interested as a little electric runabout. It seats two, has an enclosed heated cabin, and can easily do a 12 mile commute on 30mph roads so that's all my needs covered.

While I could buy a petrol car I'd rather not. Going to a petrol station is inconvenient compared to charging at home. Petrol cars are smelly, you have only to walk alongside a busy road to smell it. So how's about comparing it to a used EV like a Nissan leaf 24kwh?

As an alternative to an electric assist bicycle it makes great sense - for city use. You wouldn't want to use it outside of 30mph zones, and no it isn't quick but most cars in the middle of a city aren't quick - 6mph is the average speed in central London. I love the thing.

Putting things this way. I do recall overtake, really slowly, SEVERAL Ferraris. All of them awesome "top models"!
We were all on, a bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic! In the outskirts of Lisbon-Portugal! For the more curious, they were going to an international Ferrari gathering in Sintra and Cascais! ;-)

Truth be told in those conditions my cheap Econobox. Was quieter, way more comfortable, cheap, economical, less pollutant... The ONLY point where it lost badly was the "status" symbol factor!

With this said, the AMI fits the bill perfectly! It was designed with a particular goal and a specific function. Where it fits brilliantly with a very Citroen design touch! What's not to like?! ;-)
Comparing apples to apples should be the norm! So compare it, not to a Jaguar V8! For goodness sake! But to other "scooter replacement" vehicles! Suddenly it jumps from a jokingly review, to the top of the range! It's that simple! ;-)

This is perfect for city streets. With 20mph zones everywhere, and parking being a big issue, the car just kinda fits everywhere. Wouldn't recommend it for 2 people though 😅

Something like this but with a bigger boot for shopping / the dog, air con, and 40mph top speed would actually be perfect for most of my journeys. Share a proper car with the partner for long motorway / out of town journeys, and use this for local commutes, shopping, popping round to friends etc.

@mojonojo3 don't see why it would have to be RHD? And it would still get pretty good economy of scale because it would be just as popular if not more so than the Ami due to the much wider range of possible buyers.

Yeah I get how each added kg of weight needs you need to up the motor power and battery capacity, but it's quite possible to achieve a good balance at a good price point these days.

For example, look at another Dacia, the Dacia Spring. Costs the equivalent of around £11k for a basic electric car with 105 mile range (or £14.5k before incentives - still much less than three times the price of the Ami). Citroen should be able to put together a small, basic, limited not-quite-a-car with less range for less than that surely.

@mrgreatauk Weight is the key, the more mass the bigger motor the bigger the battery, which then also adds to the cycle of then also needing to increase size of motor and battery, every ounce adds to this. AC is also very punishing on battery.

you then have reduced number of potential sales as it no longer fits in the category that the car was designed to fit as specified by French & Belgian law, car would also have to be RHD, Futher limiting it to UK & Ireland.

so you no longer get cost discount of mass manufacturing so cost goes up again.

@mojonojo3 not sure why it would have to be trebled - would need a more powerful motor, chassis extended by 2 or 3 feet, and an air con system, but aside from that it would still be a very small and basic 'car'. Perhaps it would have to follow more stringent legal requirements if it wasn't limited to 30mph, but a 'proper' car like the dacia sandero can do that for under £10k.

Me and my friends would have loved this when we were younger, it's a really safe way to start your driving journey and start becoming road safe.. genius idea.. but even now as a 30yr old woman who has never driven and it to scared to start driving, I think this is perfect, so cute and it's not too fast, enough space for a quick pop to the shops or to go to work, two seats are great. Really practical for city woman life style. Can't wait for this to launch in the UK.💄👠👜

I don't want to feel every tiny bump, i want to have air conditioning, want to have at least SOME trunk space and NORMAL windows. Since whene those are for ego? If you don't want to drive a motorised chair - it means you have an ego problem? Maybe sleeping in bed, rather than sleeping on the floor - is an ego problem too? "Smart four two" has air conditioning - wondering if that's a car for ego too, lol.

It took me a while to think of a good purpose for this car. However, I have had one. So cities are difficult to park a normal car, so councils buy these, like the electric scooters and uses that, and plug it in when finished. That would be good for the air pollution in cities.

I like it, interesting throwback to 60’s bubble cars and at least it has reverse! I’d like a sun shield in that roof light, and better ventilation.
8 hp is about the same as my old Honda C90!
Ideal in places like Malta with short distances, loads of sunshine for solar charging but far too many cars and traffic jams in towns. Only problem is it’ll mostly be driven by a single occupant so although it’s short it doesn’t really help solve the traffic problem like scooters do. But it’s a lot safer, and drier!

@Kronos I live in Canada but I don't live where you have to drive 1000 kilometres to get anywhere. I live on an Island, and I'm retired. My needs are all within a few KMs of me. It would suit me fine.

@Geth Platform Where are these "most people" of whom you speak? My daily work commute is much farther than 20 miles and I live in one of the less spread out parts of my country.

if i am honest i love the size and look of this on the outside, if they put another £5k onto the price but added a better interior say a 10" screen and a few other bits id have one....make it go atleast 40mph though

One of my friends has this car. It is possible to go beyond 45kmh when going downhill. You just have to put it on neutral. However, I wouldn't recommend it. He told me he got to 65kmh and almost toppled the car over 😂

This thing is amazing perfect for a student or short city trips , who care how fast it can go when the traffic is 10km a hr.

I like this car… give it 45 mph top speed and it would be a perfect little runabout. Not everything has to have 500 +hp, and that’s from someone who drives a new amg c63s. A time and place for everything.

TESLA made a Prototype car out of a SMART fortwo , it had a TESLA motor and battery , and could go 0 - 60 in 3 seconds @ 130 mph.

@Alex K Not in all cities, in many cities in South Africa the speed limit is between 37 and 50 mph. Same with suburbs where the speed limit is 37mph.

@Alex K But that's the thing, other than the severely limited top speed it would be absolutely perfect for 90% of my travel needs--most of my journeys involve travel into town, and I rarely do more than 10-20 miles at a time.

I think this would be great as first car for some people and for older people who just need to do their shopping in it. I wish I could get one for my mum but she hasn’t past her test because this would be so good for to go see family and do the shopping

I can see this being very popular. Especially with the younger generation and ladies. City dwellers and those who aren't into cars but despise public transport. Similar to the electric scooters and bike rentals. Nervous drivers and even the elderly. Fun little thing, but they did their research here, there is a market for this.

I can't help but like it, it makes no apologies for what it is and a lot of the cost savings to keep the cost down are really practical ideas, like the identical front and back panels and only needing to make one version of the door to put on either side.

The Ami is brilliant for 80% of the normal use of a car. My daily commute is 15 miles, an average speed of 20 mph, and all on 30 mph roads. If it was available in the UK it would be a definite contender.

I honestly think this Ami is a really nice progress and engineering breakthrough for people who understand the limitations of this class of cars. I mean really, how can you criticize performance of a car that is forbidden by law to drive faster than 45 km/h. Take off the limiter and test its real capabilities if you want to do a fair review of engineering properties. BTW taking off or changing speed limits on this class of moped-cars is quite common operation in Finland for people who get their full driving license but still want to keep the old vehicle for urban driving.

Is no one going to mention it has a freaking glass sunroof? Most £50k+ cars don't even have one unless you spend £1500 as an optional extra!

If the price is right... and you want to get from A to B on a single charge... with protection from wind & rain... and the warranty is good enough... then its a sensible purchase! ( if Chinese EV imports arrive though, they are bound to offer better value for money)

I am thinking they should develop some sort of battery pack that can be taken out and charge at home then plug back in for driving. This is because there is not enough charging stations and it takes quite long to charge... Especially for apartments dwellers.

Actually, as a kind of city car that you can rent for a short while through an app or something like those e-scooters, i think that would actually work really well. Kinda cool, honestly.

I could see the concept but there are a million different factors to think about and you gotta think about vandalism and people breaking these or popping the tyres

Verry nice in my oppinion, perfect for going somewhere within the city or just having a fun drive, I think a solar panel on the roof would help the battery for a bit longer drive, plastic boddy is also OK because no rust, dents, it's light and no painting needed because it's already that color, only thing bout plastic is it gets pretty soft while in the hot sun and not verry protective in a collision with another car, but pretty practical I recon 😉👍

You can actually go faster than 45kph. Going downhill, right when you hit 45kph, press the Neutral button. It will let you roll faster. ;)

Its definitely got a style that would need to grow on you... Not sure how much it weighs but a higher performance and slightly longer range version could find a market as a tow car behind motorhomes. 50 MPH and 80 miles and it would be great for day trips from a campsite.
