Amongst Heroes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Bottled up and thrown away,
Drowning in the deep.
This shame carries a weight
You can't sink in your sleep.

All this time spent behind the walls,
These barriers
Built high to keep away anything that could make you feel.
Man the towers, we can't see you slip.
I wonder what it's like to burn
With no room to let in love

And I can tell that you're not living,
You're just trying hard to breathe.
What will it take for me
To put you at ease.

Open up to me,
You can't do this on your own.
You've been living like you think
That you could make it
Alone.

Living like a fugitive
In this world
That's all you've ever known

Faltering further
As you let the wind take
The things that made you
A mountain that won't break
I know you're to scared to wake up
And I'm doing the best that I can
To make you strong enough
To open your eyes

Let me show you
That there's no need for you to hide
Your purpose, your strength
And everything that makes you okay
Are right before you
Open your eyes

And I can tell
That you're not living
You're just trying hard to breathe
What will it take for me
To put you at ease.

This can't be the end of you
With a silent surrender to dreams unfulfilled

I won't let you quit while your heart's still beating
I'll walk this with you If you'd take my hand

You're in control of everything that defines you
So please believe me when I say

You're not lost
Until you give up on yourself
You're not lost
Turn the page and start again

You are the author

Open up your eyes
You're in control of everything that defines you
Open up your eyes

You're not lost,
Turn the page and start again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Amongst Heroes' song, "The Author" speak about the struggles in life and how the pressures of the world can make someone feel like they are drowning, and everything that they do is not enough. It talks about how the weight of the shame that one feels can become unbearable, and how one can end up barricading themselves behind walls built to keep everything out, including love, that would make them feel better. The singer expresses his concern for the person's well-being and how he is willing to walk the journey with him/her, and remind them that they are not lost even if it feels that way.

The lyricist has used a lot of imagery and metaphors in the song that add a deeper meaning to the words. For instance, "bottled up and thrown away" represents how someone's emotions can be ignored or dismissed. "Living like a fugitive in this world" signifies how someone can feel like he/she doesn't fit in or belong. "This can't be the end of you" means his/her life is not doomed to failure, and there is hope for a better future. Finally, "You are the author" implies that each person is in control of his/her own life, and it is up to them to write their own story.

Funnily enough, our drummer is known for the crazy faces he makes when he gets into the zone live haha, We were shooting at 1 AM in a populated area though, so we only got one take in of the drums and that was the result PS thanks for the kind words!!

It's unfortunate that the screamer is no longer with the band, but this is still an awesome song regardless. 'Hey everyone, we have some unfortunate news. We have decided to part ways with our screamer, Nich. This past year and a half with Nich has been an incredible experience, and we wish him nothing but the best in all of his future endeavors in life." Taken from their Facebook page.
