Lee grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA. He has been quoted as saying that he is fortunate to have seen different sides of life in America. Lee enrolled at the University of South Carolina in 1995. He began to play guitar and write songs seriously while he studied English. After graduating with an English degree, Lee moved back to Philadelphia to teach elementary school. He later made the tough decision to stop teaching in order to pursue a career in music. Shortly thereafter, he released a self-produced EP that featured five of his original songs, which did extremely well in Philadelphia and created a buzz. Norah Jones was the person who finally gave Lee his big breakthrough when she asked him to open for her 2004 tour. Lee then went on to produce his self-titled debut album. In March and April of 2005 Lee opened for the tour that Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan were both embarking on, all 3 performers were extremely well received by critics as the tour went by, with Dylan receiving some of his strongest reviews in years. On October 3, 2006, Lee released his second album, "Supply & Demand" to critical and commercial acclaim.
At the age of only 27, Amos Lee has enjoyed notable success with his debut album and looks to have a promising future in the music business. His favorite artists and sources of inspiration include Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, John Prine, Bill Withers, and James Taylor.
Southern Girl
Amos Lee Lyrics

Well the time that was coming
The road has begun to move beneath my feet
Good things come to an end
Well I hope through the pain
The heartache and strain we can still remain friends
Something about a southern girl
In a Mississippi morning
She's an angel in flight
In a blink of an eye
She'll be out of your sight
Something about a southern girl
You're a soft melody
Well I swear that I heard
From a lost mockingbird stuck up in a tree
We got a lot going on
Even though I'm not here
Please don't shed any tears for me day when I'm gone
Something about a southern girl
Make me feel right
In a Mississippi morning
She's an angel in flight
In a blink of an eye
She'll be out of your sight
Something about a southern girl
I never meant to leave you lonely
It was only in your mind
Girl, I never meant to leave you lonely
It was only a matter of time
Something about a southern girl
Make me feel right
In a Mississippi morning
She's an angel in flight
In a blink of an eye
She'll be out of your sight
Something about a southern
Something about a southern girl
In the song "Southern Girl," Amos Lee bids farewell to his southern love interest. The lyrics suggest that he is leaving the relationship with the hope that they can remain friends despite the pain and heartache that comes with ending things.
The chorus of the song repeatedly emphasizes the singer's love for his southern girl. He finds comfort and joy in her presence, describing her as an angel in flight. He acknowledges that the relationship will not last forever, as she will eventually be out of his sight.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of fate, suggesting that the singer's departure from the relationship was inevitable. He assures his southern girl that it was never his intention to leave her lonely, but it was only a matter of time before he had to leave.
Overall, "Southern Girl" is a bittersweet love song that acknowledges the pain of letting go while celebrating the joy and comfort that love can bring.
