I wanna see a world ruled by crustaceans, like crabs. Especially since a long long time ago before dinasours even roamed the earth, sea scorpions were the most dominant until the rise of fish. Also today there are lots of creatures we call crabs that are not actually crabs or true crabs. Yeah what I'm saying is lots of non crabs become crabs

An animal evolving a foam-like cover instead of fur is such an interesting and original concept, goddamn. Now imagine if those foam glands slowly made the foam more firm. Over millions of years, the glands adapt. Eventually the foam glands evolve into something similar to hair follicles that produce very soft bulbs of keratin.

We now have frog sheep made of cloud bubbles. This sounds like such an adorable fairy tale but also oddly possible in real life

Has there ever been any speculative evolution of the octopus? I would very much like to see that! Since there have already been xenobiologists who have described the rise of octopus since they have massive amounts of neurons (e.g. throughout the animal, including each leg, which has the ability to feel, taste and smell) it is known that they have a great degree of intelligence from using that different type of "brain." They already have their own video channels such as 'Octolab' etc, but I remember someone showing drawings of octos swinging through trees.

I'd dearly love to see these creatures advance thru the eons!

This is late, but "Children of Ruin" by Adrian Tchaikovsky is exactly this concept. It heavily dives into the language and logistics behind an Octopod society. It's one of my favorite books and I highly recommend it

I love speculative biology, but this project has one problem as I see it. The idea is presented that these amphibians wouldn't transition to forms of exothermic metabolism. We have evidence that both crocodilians and dinosaurs could change from warm-blooded to cold-blooded and back again. Birds, being warm-blooded reptiles, show the transition from ectothermic to exothermic lifestyles. Why wouldn't amphibians do the same over the eons in one shape or another?

@Laurel Silberman Hi, just saw this question! The reason they're illustrated like this is because, fundamentally, the thesis they were created for emphasizes preparing concept art for 3D modeling. The few creatures that did get 3D modeled (The Freeport, Sucker lump and Catastrophic Fragging) on the site also got front views, and in 3D modeling you intersect those two images as reference when modeling. The idea was I could go back and do front views/model the other creatures the same way. To be honest, if I could redo it, I would illustrate them as you mentioned.

One thing about the inhabitated lodge: given its a desert animal (I think) it would make more sense if its tadpoles inhabit its back. A protected reservoir seems tl be good for tadpoles in a water poor enviroment.
And given how beecomb frogs already carry their eggs/tadpoles in Chambers of there belly, this would feel like a nice nod to this real animal.
In addition this could be a way to get "mammalian" or "placentalian" amphibians of sorts, if it would continue to evolve along this line

There were several things that were not taken into account when evolving over time. They stuck way too closely to frog morphology and tried to hammer-fit it into each of the niches. Amphibians have varied morphology now that were advantageous for land dwelling amphibians but were not mentioned. Amphibians that become completely terrestrial without need for water as part of their life cycle no longer meet the definition of "amphibian". Every evolved amphibian retained frog eyes and body structure. Evolution is also influenced by things never mentioned as well. Predator prey relationships drive evolution. Fast running prey animals and predictors are an example. Size also dictates evolution due to environmental factors. Amphibians respiratory system is a limiting factor as many don't have lungs and breathe by uptake of oxygen through the skin or primitive lungs. This limits size. The larger the animal the more oxygen is needed. That's why lungs evolved. This would also change mouth and nose shape.

Technically there are species of toads that live almost entirely without a pool of water, except for in their tadpole forms, which the video mentioned they still have. So as long as they have an aquatic tadpole state, they’re amphibious. You made a lot of true points, but nature’s ability to branch out is almost entirely limitless.

I love these what if speculative documentaries! I love the ideas of what if some animals were the dominant species. Friggin love the Moist Bois and the Freeple.
My favorite idea is a cephalopod world. In the game Splatoon, the lore is people died to a massive war and sea life took hold. It's kinda hinted their evolution was rapid due to either radiation, science gone wrong, or the lack of mammalian predators. So I wonder what a squid or octo world would be like. Would both evolve simultaneously like the Inklings and Octolings did? Would civilization rise again? I dunno, I wonder what a realistic Splatoon world would be where sealife, specifically invertebrates, evolved.

Interesting, though I'd certainly like to know how she solved the problem of amphibian reproduction in her book. In our world, the amphibious ancestors of reptiles evolved the amniote egg, allowing for them to roam far from bodies of water previously necessary for egg laying.

The amniote egg further led to the evolution of the dinosaurs, birds, & (eventually) placental mammals - so it's a pretty big deal.

as much as I love the concept of this, I wish the creatures would flesh out more and develop a different set of body types most of these just look like mythical frog/toads and while they might be able to survive as they are conceptually, I can't imagine how some of them would actually survive along the path of evolution to actually get to their destination, and some ideas don't even seem feasible, or more half-baked than anything, like the frog with blubber and hair/fur? certainly take traits from the living animals we have today, as we know they're likely successful minus human intervention, but like... don't forget they're amphibians, are these solutions to their new odd living conditions even possible for them, are they able to stay moist in that kind of atmosphere? the solutions don't seem to fit even base theme of an amphibian, I love I concept of this but I think if you want to create a universe where they're the major winners, they're inevitably going to look similar to the animals we have today, but in what ways are they going to be the same, and how will evolution deal with their differences. evolution isn't only about what could work for them, its also a mix of what animals get unlucky or are slowed down and turned to pray by certain developing traits, will they be able to stand in the ring of survival of the fittest

I'm just wondering what happened for frogs to outlive most other species, like our frogs are sensitive to temperature, acidity, atmospheric contents, water levels... like that's wild. also it's weird that toads, relatives of frogs and usually much better suited to take over aren't shown; as well as the more poisonous frog variants, granted poison might not have yet evolved in this timeline.

Ok, the Foaming trogglefolk is trully unique and amazing. I need to see this proyect in best detail because to me is hard to believe how frogs can outcompete "advaced" lifeforms. Its seems events like the triassic-jurassic and k-t extintions never hapened in this timeline, wich is fine. I dont know, but amphibians adapting to drier and coldest

An interesting bit of speculative evolution but I really wanted more details . . . I could be satisfied by saying the world was warmer and wetter but then you get into the tundra and the arid plains and I'm left wondering how Amphibians adapted to those environments. How are they breeding? Reptile like eggs? Live birth? Some sort of water filled marsupial pouch? The need to breed in water, and the tendency of Amphibian skin to pull in toxins are the two biggest challenges these sorts of creatures would face going forward.

These are problems life could solve, given a more amphibian friendly start but . . . the details on how are just lacking. Not addressing these issues would have been more believable if we'd kept the world warmer and wetter, perhaps through a thicker atmosphere with more C02 . . . but such a world would have been believable because it lacked dry savanna regions and cold dry polar tundra areas. That is obviously not the case with Amphiterra.

Imagine a speculative evolution world where descendants of tree dwelling rodents, which became intelligent species and evolves into furless bipedal species and roams entire world because of their evolutionary affinity to walking on two legs. Their civilisation became so advanced, that they are now sitting before their state of art calculating machines, able to communicate through thousands of kilometers and they use that technology to imagine what are other possible evolutionary variations.

Hmm, interesting! It does make me wonder though, since these early frogs outcompeted the Synapsids and Archosaurs (thereby stopping the rise of Mammals, Birds, and Crocodilians-- all of which are major predators towards the frogs of our timeline), surely there'd still be some reptiles still present in Amphiterra? Squamates (Lizards and Snakes) could easily inhabit the dryer reaches of Amphiterra, serving as both prey and predators to the also present (arguably more Toads than) Frogs?

Not to mention, Frogs aren't the only amphibians out there that would likely thrive in this alternate world; Salamanders, Newts, and Caecilians could also have some place (The Caecilians in particular could serve as a niche-replacement for our Real World snakes!)

The idea of amphibians out-competing the synapsids, archosaurs, and other advanced amniotes is absurd. Basically, the amphibians would need to re-evolve the amniote adaptions (or some analogue thereof) in order to even survive in most arid or semi-arid niches. The only way that would be plausible for them to move into fully terrestrial niches is in the amniotes went fully extinct. In that scenario, the salamanders would evolve into reptile-mimics, leading first to land-based lizard-like creatures, and then forming more derived creatures.

However, that happens after the lizard stage is largely a matter of speculation. It only took about 20-30 million years for basal archosauriformes to radiate into recognizable pterosaurs, prosauropods, and other lineages.

One thing that’s pretty cool about our time line if there’s warm blooded fish there was most likely was a warm blooded amphibian at some point. The Platyhystrix could’ve been warm blooded.

I think " the future is wild" has influenced generations after it was made, and will influence generations to come indirectly, due to those that grew up with it making versions of their own, the point I'm making is between 1 mil or more current and future scientists eventually, as per the laws of probabilities, they will get a scenarios that might actually happen with a percentage of 90%+ .
So personally I can't wait to see what they come up with in the next 60 odd years, I'm planning to hit 90 just so I can see as much of the future as possible, I've lived through a l0ot of technological evolutions already, just imagine the next 60 years... the Future is Wild :)

I will admit, as AMZING and GREAT this book is. I mean literally, It has PHWOG. I feel like the predators are too aggressive looking, like in real life, Predators dont have these Angry eyes and bulked teeth.
Just saying I feel the Frogs should have become more like Bleezbufo, just larger bullfrogs, Later evolving into More Apex Dinosaurian style frogs possibly.

It's interesting theorycrafting, but one thing to remember is, that just because a species obtains increased cognitive capabilities, doesn't mean it will become technologically advanced. There needs to be a... need for it. Intelligent beings don't necessarily strive to become advanced. We really only have our own species as the example, but several civilizations get to a point where their needs are met, and due their specific needs, they don't go beyond. Some considered the Romans to be on the verge of a revolution, but some also speculate that it wouldn't have occurred, because they never had the need for it. Instead of pushing for innovations, they were content with incremental improvements over time, because everything was going rather well.

A quick thought on conversion evolution. Did anyone else notice that every mammal such as dolphins, while, seals, and a lot others, that their tails, or dorsal fins always moves up and down? I mean always up and down? On the other hand the ones descended from water and never dwell on the land such a sharks and pretty much every fish, there tails move from left to right?

You don’t have to change your basic frog all that much in order it to be awesome at an entirely different thing.

Compare your actuation clawed frogs to your bright-eyed tree frogs. Both have very few changes from your standard frog, yet are specialized at entirely opposite things, one never leaving the water and the other never leaving trees.

I’d like to see one about different farm animals. I imagine a super advanced future human civilization builds this planet filled with cows chickens, sheep and other animals. Most likely for the purpose of mass-producing meat, wool and eggs. But the humans lose control of this farm planet, and the animals are left to their own devices.

I feel like a lot of speculative biology is mostly just about being weird and alien for the sake of being weird and alien. I'm not a biologist, and obviously projects like this are works of passion and expression. But sometimes I feel like we're trying to overly compensate with stuff. This was a really cool idea, and I really don’t want to be “that person,” but…an overwhelming majority of amphibians need to lay their eggs in water or the eggs will die. Like, straight-up lose all their water because they don’t have shells to keep it in. Even those that don’t lay eggs directly in water generally either put them above water so the tadpoles can fall into the water or lay eggs in very damp places. And tadpoles need to be in water or they’ll suffocate. So realistically, these amphibians would probably not survive in nearly as many places as this assumes.

This series is really cool, the art is fantasyic & imaginative however the think the artist should've copied Dylan Bajda and set the story on in an alien ecosystem with only frogs, setting it on earth feels like an unneccassary constraint that leads to alot of unanswered questions

Some of this feeld... Weird. Like they were the way they were because of a meme or a rule of cool instead of a really interesting take on evolution. Like the bear frog and the artic bear frog (i dont remember their name but you know wich im talking about). The normal bear frog was bigger and meaner even though generally speaking artic counterparts tend to be far bigger in real life? Like actual bears and polar bears?
Still an amazing project and i love the designs, but after so many incredible alternative evolution worlds, i got a little nitpicky.
