Old Movies
Amplifier Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Watching through the dust.
I'm trapped in a theatre of velvet and rust,
With lonely shafts of light.
And other ghosts drinking refreshments that's served up by skeletons.

It's the spaces in the dark,
Where shadows of dead souls dance on the walls.
Where not only were you the star,
But you were the bleak soundtrack to my film noir.
Yeah, well that was you.

That was you.
Yeah that was you.
Mm-mm that was you.
And what if we just plug-in and go?

Uhh hu hu
Uhh hu hu
Uhh hu hu

And it's my job to be,
Embittered and constantly proving a mystery.
And although we're dismal in the roles,
I'm scratchy and mono as Bogart and you are a sepia Monroe

Who's beneath the cobwebs and the chandeliers.
With others who've been dead for years.
Like heroes brought to life again.
Like picture shows and Rocket-men.

And the light that fills the room
Well it's the flicker from a paper moon.
And when the film is run and through.
Well that's when the darkness must win.

Uhh hu hu

Uhh hu hu
Uhh hu hu...

Overall Meaning

The Amplifier song, "Old Movies," is an ode to the beauty of old films and how they transport us to another world through their nostalgia and memories. The lyrics describe the experience of being in a dusty vintage cinema, surrounded by the remnants of its glorious past. The space, with its velvet seats and rusted walls, seems to have a life of its own - one that is filled with shadows of dead souls and lonely shafts of light. The singer feels trapped in this space, but also enriched by the memories that it evokes. The ghosts return to relive their pasts with refreshments served up by spooked-out skeletons.

The second half of the song is a tribute to a specific memory - one of watching an old film together with a loved one. The singer describes the experience of being transported into the film and becoming one with its characters. The loved one is likened to Marilyn Monroe, who lives on in sepia-toned glory beneath the cobwebs and chandeliers of the old cinema. The lyrics describe the flicker of the old projector as resembling the light from a paper moon. The ending of the song suggests that as the film nears its final moments, the darkness must win - a reference to the light being snuffed out and the viewer returning to reality.

Line by Line Meaning

There are others present in the theatre, dead people's ghosts, drinking, being served by skeletons, so hollow has everything come to be.

Yeah, well that was you. That was you. Yeah that was you. Mm-mm that was you.
This is a direct address to the subject, over-emphasizing the point that it was, indeed, them that was the star and the bleak soundtrack.

And what if we just plug-in and go?
A rhetorical question - should the memories and connections just be brought back to enjoy for all eternity?

There's only so much life that could be recreated, and whatever the stage actors achieved in those moments of glory just cannot be retained. Eventually, darkness will have its due.

Repetition of sounds, possibly to emphasize the haunting, melancholic tone of the song or to indicate a continuing reality and haunting misery.
