Is that what that means? Hm. So like, the neutrons go right through inches of steel because they're "highly penetrative"? So they don't pass through like neutrinos or X rays or something. They fuck shit up because they're like little bullets of quantum, armor piercing, military guy's wet dream juice?

I'm not saying that that's not true or implausible. I'm just saying, that doesn't REALLY explain it. You have the cause, the neutrons, the effect, they fuck shit up, but the only explanation is "highly penetrative"..

Sort of. The idea was that the only way to stop the Russians in the Fulda Gap was nuclear weapons, and they didn't want to destroy Germany in the process. Damage to infrastructure would be minimized. Also, yes, it would destroy tank crews.

Modern tanks can withstand it(obviously not at or too close to ground zero), and more modern tanks have air filtration and protection against biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons. With the neutron bomb, it will still likely kill them

@Maciej Matuła I've seen steel cables turn directly into plasma in slow mo footage of the explosions, the steel surrounding the test sites is disappeared, simply gone.

@fault3k I was reading up on NERVA right now and radiation shelding for spacecrafts and suddenly I remembered that neutron bombs were a thing back then. I was hoping to find an actual test from the 60s. Many videos were unclassified in the last few years.

@Maciej Matuła exactly, and the actual blast zone of the bomb is hot enough to ash the ground under it at millions of degrees, it doesn't matter if you have tungsten steel at the epicenter of the blast, it's as hot as the Sun and the heat from that initial blast radiates outwards causing a blast wave. The pressure wave itself is a direct result of the intense heat which is obviously not survivable from three football fields away for even a reasonably sized bomb.

@fault3k That is correct. If we even forget the blast itself, the enormous heat generated by the bomb in the "laughable" 5-20 kiloton range would cook the crew inside. It's not like inside of a tank is an active refrigerator smh.

You missed the whole point of the video. The neutron bomb has a lower explosive yield than traditional nuclear weapons, but its neutron flux can get through armor that the normal intense heat of other bombs wouldn’t melt through, and it will kill the people behind it. It’s an alternative to conventional explosives and traditional nuclear weapons developed for this specific purpose

I wonder why i cant find a neutron bomb test as video on youtube. A lot of different bomb types are watchable but no neutron bombs. Would like see how it looks like and the difference to other nuke bomb types.

Nathan Wagner I believe that is incorrect. Neutrons having no charge will not interact with any molecules around them as they travel until they come in direct contact with a particle allowing them to still effect people over large distances.

Also per google “Due to the high kinetic energy of neutrons, this radiation is considered the most severe and dangerous radiation to the whole body when it is exposed to external radiation sources”
