Graduation Song
Amy Diamond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're only prisoners of circumstance
Time has a way of slipping through your hands
Too young to notice too many plans
And the band plays on

We had the answers 'til the questions changed
Life it is sideways our smiles were strained
A pretty picture in a broken frame
And the band plays on

This is were the road turns
Enter a new world
Did you have the time of your life
This is were the road turns
My friend my partner
We'll catch up some other time
We'll catch up some other time

A box of memories underneath my couch
Beautiful story with the end ripped out
To much for me right now to think about
And the band plays on
And the band plays on

This is were the road turns
Enter a new world
Did you have the time of your life
This is were the road turns
My friend my partner
We'll catch up some other time
We'll catch up some other time

(Ooohhhh, ooohhhh)
(Ooohhhh, ooohhhh)

This is were the road turns
(Tuuuuuuuuuuurns)
IEnter a new world
Did you have the time of your life

This is were the road turns
My friend my partner

We'll catch up some other time
We'll catch up some other time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Amy Diamond's song Graduation Song are about the bittersweet feelings of growing up and moving on from the past. The first few verses talk about the feeling of being trapped by circumstance, of having dreams and plans but feeling like time is slipping away too fast to pursue them. It speaks to the universal experience of feeling like life is passing by too quickly, and that it's difficult to hold on to our hopes and plans for the future.

Then the song turns to the theme of change – how life's questions can change suddenly, leaving us feeling disoriented and unsure. The line "life is sideways, our smiles were strained" exemplifies this feeling of uncertainty and discomfort with our changing situation. Despite this, the song encourages the listener to embrace change and enter a new world. The idea is that the familiar roads we've been walking on will soon turn, and we will be forced to move forward in new directions.

The box of memories underneath the couch references our past experiences, and the nostalgia associated with those memories. But even as we sit with our memories in the present, life continues to move forward, as signified by the repetition of "and the band plays on." The final verse offers reassurance that we will catch up with our friends and partners later on, suggesting that life goes on, but it's possible to hold onto the bonds that tie us to others throughout our lives.
