I want to hold you high and steal your pain away
I keep your photograph, and I know it serves me well
I want to hold you high and steal your pain
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
You've gone away
The worst is over now and we can breathe again
I want to hold you high, and steal my pain away
There's so much left to learn, and no one left to fight
I want to hold you high and steal your pain
'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
'Cause I'm broken when I'm open
And I don't feel like I am strong enough
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
'Cause I'm broken when I'm lonesome
And I don't feel right when you're gone away
You've gone away
You don't feel me here anymore
The lyrics to Amy Lee’s song “Broken” convey a sense of loss and longing. The singer wants to hold someone close and steal their pain away. They feel broken, both when they’re open and lonesome. Their love for this person is so strong, that without them, they no longer feel like they’re strong enough to face the world. The chorus repeats the idea that the singer is broken when they’re lonesome or open, but also when the person they love is gone away.
The first stanza indicates that the singer is deeply in love with someone, and finds solace in their laughter. They keep their photograph, suggesting that their love for this person is strong enough that just looking at a picture of them could make the singer feel better. However, the singer is also hurting and wants to “steal” their pain away. In the second stanza, it seems that the person the singer loves has left them. The worst is over, but it’s clear that the singer has yet to move on. They repeat the desire to hold the person they love close, to take away not just their pain, but their own as well. In the final stanza, the singer repeats the chorus, indicating that this feeling of brokenness is something that persists regardless of any changes in their life.
Overall, “Broken” is a powerful song about the pain of love and loss. The repeated refrains highlight the sense of longing and despair. However, the song also conveys a sense of hope, as the singer repeats their desire to hold someone close and ease their pain. It’s a testament to the power of love and connection in our lives.

been fighting addiction for the last 10 years and i got clean 45 days ago. This song hits home. I felt so broken. I would hide in a room by myself and use till i passed out where ever i was and woke up, most times wondering how and why. For the first time in a long time im grateful to be here. Thank god everyday for everything and a chance to change my life.

I’m glad to hear your are fighting your addiction. I hope you have a support network to help you out during this hard time. I would recommend you reading books from the author Gabor Mate. Thanks to his book, I am able to find the roots of my suffer and am working toward living peace with it. When someone has an addiction, instead of pointing a finger at that person, perhaps we should ask that person what had happened to them. I hope you will continue to fight hard to stay clean. Heal and be at peace with yourself.
