Going to California
Amy Lee Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spent my days with a woman unkind
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine
Made up my mind to make a new start
Going to California with an aching in my heart
Someone told me there's a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair

Ah ah ah
Took my chances on a big jet plane
Never let them tell you that they're all the same
The sea was red and the sky was grey
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
As the children of the sun began to awake

Seems that the wrath of the Gods
Got a punch on the nose and it started to flow
I think I might be sinking
Throw me a line if I reach it in time
I'll meet you up there where the path
Runs straight and high

To find a queen without a king
Says she plays guitar and cries and she sings
Side a white mare in the footsteps of dawn
Tryin' to find a woman who's never, never, never been born
Standing on a hill in my mountain of dreams
Tryin' telling myself it's not as hard, hard, hard as it seems

Ah ah ah

Overall Meaning

"Going to California" is a song by Amy Lee from Evanescence, released in 2007 as a bonus track on the album, The Open Door. The song is a cover of the classic by Led Zeppelin, released in 1971, and its lyrics depict a man who leaves behind a woman who treated him poorly and goes to California, hoping to find a new life and love.

The first verse reveals the singer's suffering: he spent time with a woman who was unkind to him and used up his resources. Nevertheless, he has decided to take control of his life and start anew by heading to California, although he feels a sense of heartache. Someone has informed him that in California, he can find a girl who has love in her eyes and wears flowers in her hair. In the second verse, he continues to pursue his dream, boarding a jet plane and ignoring the warnings about the journey as he is determined to find a new beginning.

There are several interpretations of the song's meaning. Some suggest that the lyrics are partly autobiographical, as Led Zeppelin's members had a difficult time with their music careers at first, and heading to California, particularly in the early 1970s, was a common dream for many musicians. The lyrics may also express the singer's recognition of the consequences of his past decisions, particularly with regard to women, and his attempt to make positive changes in his life, culminating in his quest for true love.

Not to disrespect Zeppelin, but I have been listening to this song for over 40 years. I just heard her sing it for the first time, and I realize, it has been waiting for her, I won't ever be able to hear it any other way. What she can do with music effects your soul, effects it so profoundly that it is irreparable. So beautiful.

Her voice is great and gives Plant a run for his money I agree but the music isn't a patch on Page and Jones. Nowhere near. Sorry.

K4Ri80

I agree. She's just another level. Feelings, precision and natural "beauty"(whatever all is inside to do what she does).
