A self-taught musician, Macdonald began by playing her father's guitar after being inspired by Travis at the T in the Park Festival in 2000, where she heard Travis' song "Turn" and wanted to play it herself. She started performing in pubs and coffee houses around Glasgow at the age of 15. She signed a record deal with Vertigo, the same record label which hosts The Killers and Razorlight. Her first single, Poison Prince, was released on May 7, 2007. Her debut album, This Is the Life, was released on July 30, 2007. "Don't Tell Me That It's Over" was released in March 2010 as the lead single from her second studio album, A Curious Thing, which was released on 8 March 2010.
Macdonald's third album, Life in a Beautiful Light, was released on June 11, 2012. The lead single, Slow It Down, is about her being a petrol head.
Human Spirit
Amy Macdonald Lyrics

Caught in a moment against your will
And I think of you tonight
The world kept going and nobody could see
The hell that was happening, too hard to believe
And I'd shed a tear for you
No matter how many wars we've fought
It's good to see that it's not dead
Human spirit is alive and well
The people couldn't get it, they said it wasn't true
How could this happen, happen to you
But we'll try our best to be home for Christmas
And all the while we're still thinking about ourselves
Worrying 'bout money and stressing about wealth
But there's much more, much more to live for
No matter how many bombs we've dropped
No matter how many wars we've fought
It's good to see that it's not dead
Human spirit is alive and well
Human spirit is alive and well
Human spirit is alive and well
The lyrics of Amy MacDonald's "Human Spirit" reflect on the tragedy of human suffering during times of war and conflict. The opening verse "The world kept moving and you stood still, caught in a moment against your will" speaks of how amidst the chaos and destruction of warfare, people can become trapped in their own worlds, unable to comprehend the horror that is unfolding around them. The second verse highlights how often those who aren't directly affected by war remain unaware of the pain and hurt it causes, referring to those who "couldn't get it" and "said it wasn't true." However, the song's chorus offers a message of hope, recognizing that despite the atrocities of war, the human spirit is resilient and will endure.
The lyrics also encourage us to remember that there is more to life than material possessions and concerns about wealth. The phrase "But there's much more, much more to live for" shows that there are other values that should be held highly, and we should focus on the positive aspects of life. The song concludes with the repeated refrain that "Human spirit is alive and well," emphasizing that despite the hardships that may come our way, our humanity will endure.
