SPARK
Amy McDonald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't wanna see the stars; don't wanna see the moon
Don't wanna see the sun that rises too soon
Don't wanna see the day; don't wanna see the night
Oh the afternoon, it feels about right

I am the spaceman flying high
I am the astronaut in the sky
Don't worry, I'm okay now
I am the light in the dark
I am the match; I am the spark
Don't worry, I'm okay now

After the sun always comes the rain
Followed by hurt and pain
After the light comes the dark
After the love comes the breaking of my heart

I am the spaceman flying high
I am the astronaut in the sky
Don't worry, I'm okay now
I am the light in the dark
I am the match; I am the spark
Don't worry, I'm okay now

I am the spaceman flying high
I am the astronaut in the sky
Don't worry, I'm okay now
I am the light in the dark
I am the match; I am the spark
Don't worry, I'm okay now

Just dry your eyes, and I'll be there
Don't live for anger or despair

Don't worry, I'm okay now
I'm okay, I'm okay now

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the stanza convey a sense of disconnection and avoidance as the singer expresses her unwillingness to confront the usual markers of time and space such as the stars, moon, or sun. Instead, she prefers the comfortable lull of the afternoons that seem to stretch in a relaxing manner. However, at the same time, the chorus reveals the singer's aspirations of being a spaceman and an astronaut. Despite her reluctance to engage with the world around her, she still yearns to explore and conquer the vastness of the sky and beyond. The repeated reassurance of "Don't worry, I'm okay now" suggests that the singer is addressing someone specific who might have their doubts about her ability to partake in this otherworldly journey but that now she is in a better place and more confident in her ambitions.

The second stanza brings forth a feeling of inevitability as the singer outlines the cyclical nature of life- how joy and love are often followed by sorrow and heartache. Nevertheless, it is in this pattern where the song's title comes into play, for the singer asserts that she is the spark that can ignite hope and light in the darkest of circumstances. In other words, even in the face of the most trying conditions, she will be there to provide some solace and comfort to those in her life who might need it. The final lines of the song serve merely to reaffirm this thought and offer the promise of support and companionship.
