Carry Me Away
Amy Ray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Carry Me Away.
I called you up today to breach my sorrow
Carry me over the line to you
How long will it take to reach tomorrow
Seems like a whole lot of time
With just these thoughts to pull me through
I see blue carpet and cold moonlight settle in
Voices whisper down the hallway of how I should have been
I feel like I'm over the water, but I'm caught in the tide
Tell me, are you calling for me?
Does this come deep from inside?
Carry me away, under the water, over the line

Carry me away, under the water, over the line
The sound slowly fades and trickles away from the scene
It's only the windows of life
They hear my dreams
Walking the distance, I feel like I've been running for miles
Happy times don't last long
I finally got there and it's too late to smile
Carry me away, under the water, over the line

Carry me away, under the water, over the line
Carry me away, under the water, into your mind.

Overall Meaning

In "Carry Me Away," Amy Ray sings about the pain of heartbreak and the longing for a lost love. She reaches out to a person, possibly an ex-lover, to help ease her sorrow and transport her to a better place. The lyrics are filled with imagery that evoke feelings of being lost at sea, of reaching across a great divide to try and grasp something just beyond reach. The metaphor of being carried away both under the water and over the line represents the sense of being pulled in all directions by the overwhelming emotions that come with heartache.

As she sings about seeing "blue carpet and cold moonlight" and hearing "voices whisper down the hallway," she seems to have retreated inside herself, lost in her own thoughts and memories. But she reaches out with a vulnerable plea: "Tell me, are you calling for me? Does this come deep from inside?" It's a moment of raw emotion, a plea for connection and understanding. The chorus, with its haunting repetition of the title phrase, underscores the sense of being pulled in all directions, of longing for the safety and comfort of someone else's arms.

Overall, "Carry Me Away" is a powerful and evocative song that captures the deep pain and sense of loss that come with heartbreak. Through her lyrics, Amy Ray has created a vivid picture of someone lost at sea, searching for a lifeline to help them weather the storm.

Janet Fraiser, the best character in the show, quite an acheivement for a guest star, her character should have been expanded and developed and certainly not killed off, and the way that Teryl Rothery was told that her character was being killed off was disgraceful/
