Lucy Stoners
Amy Ray Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We were talking ticket slump
We'd try to put our finger on it
Quantify the undoing of each little step
And its just a lack of press
And the refrigerator down at the boys club
With its little magnets of poetry
And they've found one hundred different ways to say blow me
Ah yeah blow me now

Janny Wenner Janny Wenner
Rolling Stone's most fearless leader
Gave the boys what they deserve
But with the girls he lost his nerve

Whoo hoo now
Hoo

In every post punk bar
There's a dressing room wall
Where the rockboy band
Will make its mark
A hundred different pictures of private parts
And some girl going down
And there's that faggot bashing poetry
But the boys are just saying love me please
With every hate filled phrase
They just give it away
Ah boys you give yourself away

You know Janny Wenner Janny Wenner
Rolling Stone's most fearless leader
Gave the boys what they deserve
But with the girls he lost his nerve

Whoo hoo now
Hoo ooh ooh ooh
Yeah whoo hoo now
Hoo ooh ooh ooh

Testing 1 2 3 in the marketplace
But its a demographic based disgrace
And a stupid secret white boy handshake
That we'll never be part of
So when its dj blow and the morning show
I give you one hundred reasons to just say no
And I said come on girls lets go right now
Oh girls lets go right now

Oh cause lucystoners don't need boners
Ain't no man could ever own her
With the boys she had the nerve to give the girls what they deserve

Lucystoners don't need boners
Ain't no man that'd ever own her
With the boys she had the nerve
Gonna give the girls what they deserve

Ah whoo hoo
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Yeah
Whoo hoo now
Ooh

I said lucystoners don't need boners
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
Whoo ooh ooh ooh ooh
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
Lucy stoners don't need boners
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
Whoo ooh ooh ooh
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
Ah whoo
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
Yeah
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
(Lucystoners don't need boners)
Whoo
(Lucystoners don't need boners)

(Lucystoners don't need boners)
(Lucystoners don't need boners

Overall Meaning

In "Lucy Stoners," Amy Ray is criticizing the male-dominated music industry and the objectification of women within it. The first verse talks about trying to understand why their tickets aren't selling, and they realize it's due to a lack of press. Then, she mentions a refrigerator at a boys club with magnets featuring vulgar poetry and sexual innuendos. She's calling out the boys for their crude behavior and the industry for promoting it. With the line, "Janny Wenner Janny Wenner," she refers to Rolling Stone's founder Jann Wenner and how he gave male bands the exposure they needed to become successful. However, when it comes to women in the industry, he "lost his nerve." In the second verse, she describes the walls of dressing rooms in post-punk bars and how male bands draw pictures of private parts and write homophobic poetry. Despite their hatred towards marginalized groups, they declare their need for love and validation.

In the chorus, she repeats the phrase "Lucy Stoners don't need boners," which is a reference to the feminist activist Lucy Stone who kept her maiden name after marriage, as opposed to taking her husband's. Ray is suggesting that women don't need men or their validation to succeed in the music industry. She also includes the line "With the boys she had the nerve to give the girls what they deserve," which speaks to the role men can play in supporting women in the industry. Overall, "Lucy Stoners" is a powerful commentary on the male-dominated music industry, the objectification of women, and the need for change.

Amy - hats off to you for singing the truth about Jann Wenner for more than two decades. I've always loved this song and it's getting repeat listens today in the wake of Wenner's incredible NYT interview and the resulting fall-out. a crime it took this long for his true colors to make headlines and it's hardly justice but the sense of schadenfreude is real. louder for the people in the back! ps. hope you'll play it at the SF Fillmore in January
