Amy Winehouse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You should be stronger than me
You've been here seven years longer than me
Don't you know you supposed to be the man?
Not pale in comparison to who you think I am
You always want to talk it through, I don't care
I always have to comfort you when I'm there
But that's what I need you to do, stroke my hair
'Cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy
Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy

You should be stronger than me
But instead you're longer than frozen turkey
Why'd you always put me in control
All I need is for my man to live up to his role
You always want to talk it through, I'm okay
I always have to comfort you every day
But that's what I need you to do, are you gay?
'Cause I've forgotten all of young love's joy
Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy

He said "the respect I made you earn
Thought you had so many lessons to learn"
I said "You don't know what love is get a grip
Sound as if you're reading from some other tired script"
I'm not gonna meet your mother anytime
I just want to grip your body over mine
Please tell me why you think that's a crime
I've forgotten all of young love's joy
Feel like a lady, and you my lady boy

You should be stronger than me
You should be stronger than me

You should be stronger than me
You should be stronger than me

Overall Meaning

In the song "Karaoke: Stronger Than Me" by Amy Winehouse, the singer is expressing her frustration with her partner's lack of emotional strength in their relationship. She implies that he has been in the relationship longer than her, and therefore, he should be more capable of taking on the traditional masculine role of being the strength in the relationship. However, she feels like she is the one who always has to comfort him and stroke his hair, which is not what she wants in a partner.

The singer also questions her partner's sexual orientation by calling him a "lady boy" and asking if he is gay. She expresses her desire for him to be more confident and assertive in the relationship, instead of always putting her in control. The singer further challenges her partner's idea of what love and respect should look like, suggesting that he needs to re-evaluate his assumptions and not impose gender stereotypes on their relationship.

Overall, the song explores themes of gender dynamics and power imbalances in relationships, challenging traditional beliefs about masculinity and femininity. The lyrics suggest a desire for a partner who is confident, self-assured, and emotionally strong, rather than someone who relies on the singer for comfort and validation.

Just giving a funk and being good looking at the same.

What is it 4 a question to somebody who give honor to one of the biggest voices of her time.
A tragedy that a young being like her left so early.
She was a Queen by her skills .
A well respected musican and a underrated lady . We love amy and u are not nice.

@@wychwoodmusic With respect, I completely disagree. I personally know at least 70 guitarists on the gigging scene in my city (small city, pop 1M or so, I am also a long-time professional musician in the city, which is how I know them well) who could play it the exact same way, without working very hard to do it. At least half of them could also be playing with vocal phrasing and delivery at the same time

So, it's a long way from incredible.

She's a huge talent, and is surely dearly missed. But no, she isn't an incredible guitarist on any level. "Incredible" is when you can play guitar in a way very few can. That's not true of Amy Winehouse, on this track, at least, and not on any others I have seen.

She was an "incredible" vocal stylist and musical presence. Really unique and powerful.

So let's agree on at least this much: she was really, really good, and it's a shame she's gone.

She was the definition of a soul singer. Understood the concept of jazz at its deepest meaning and still managed to put her own spin on it. We miss you Amy ❤

The fact that a 19 year old had the wherewithal to put these feeling into words and into a song is amazing! Amy was a true talent!

@MjStslker

I was just thinking this

Yep. Look up Laura Nyro for another example. She was another goddess who wrote many hits during her teens.
