A member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra during her youth, Winehouse signed to Simon Fuller's 19 Management in 2002 and soon recorded a number of songs before signing a publishing deal with EMI. She also formed a working relationship with producer Salaam Remi through these record publishers. Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released in 2003. Many of the album's songs were influenced by jazz and, apart from two covers, were co-written by Winehouse. Frank was a critical success in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The song "Stronger Than Me" won her the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
Winehouse released her follow-up album, Back to Black, in 2006, which went on to become an international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards it was nominated for British Album of the Year, and she received the award for British Female Solo Artist. The song "Rehab" won her a second Ivor Novello Award. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won five awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and becoming the first British woman to win five Grammys, including three of the General Field "Big Four" Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Rehab"), as well as Best Pop Vocal Album.
Winehouse was plagued by drug and alcohol addiction. She died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, at the age of 27. After her death, Back to Black temporarily became the UK's best-selling album of the 21st century. VH1 ranked Winehouse 26th on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music.

You wore it to the disco, where everyone was in jeans
But you were just a rich girl, and only having fun
Your worn out dresses, got stares from everyone
Hey, little rich girl where did you go wrong?
You left for London, when you were nineteen
Had to pawn all your nice clothes, just living on dreams
Now he's taken your freedom for a date unknown
But you were just a rich girl, hardly having fun
Your worn out dresses, brought stares from everyone
Hey, little rich girl where did you go wrong?
Hey, little rich girl you've been away for so long
And now little rich girl, I wrote this song
Hey, little rich girl my love for you is gone
And now little rich girl, I know where you belong
At your dad's office party all the movies were blue
You caused him so much heartache, because the screen star was you
You left for London, when you were nineteen
Had to pull off your nice clothes, but you were living on dreams
You were a rich girl, and only having fun
But your worn out dresses, brought stares from everyone
Hey, little rich girl where did you go wrong?
Hey, little rich girl where did you go wrong?
The lyrics of "Hey Little Rich Girl" by Amy Winehouse tell the story of a young woman who, despite her privilege, struggles to find her place in the world. The first verse describes her teenage years, where she flaunts her wealth with a fur coat at a disco, while everyone else is dressed casually. The chorus questions where she went wrong, implying that despite her upbringing, she has somehow lost her way.
The second verse explains that the young woman left home to pursue her dreams in London but was left with nothing after a man took advantage of her financially. She was forced to pawn her nice clothes and live on mere dreams. The second chorus further emphasizes the question of what happened to this little rich girl who was hardly having fun despite all her privileges.
The third verse touches on her fame and how it has caused trouble for her father, but despite her success, she is still struggling to find her way. The song ends on a bitter note, as the singer, who claims to have loved her, now knows where she really belongs, implying that she has fallen far from grace.
Overall, the song seems to be a commentary on the hard-to-swallow truth that being rich doesn't guarantee happiness or fulfillment in life. It speaks to the fact that having all the money and resources in the world can sometimes weigh people down.
