Rehab
Amy Winehouse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They tried to make me go to rehab
But I said, "No, no, no"
Yes, I've been black
But when I come back, you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab
I won't go, go, go

I'd rather be at home with Ray
I ain't got seventy days
'Cause there's nothing, there's nothing you can teach me
That I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway

I didn't get a lot in class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass

They tried to make me go to rehab
But I said, "No, no, no"
Yes, I've been black
But when I come back, you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab
I won't go, go, go

The man said, "Why do you think you here?"
I said, "I got no idea"
I'm gonna, I'm gonna lose my baby
So I always keep a bottle near
He said, "I just think you're depressed"
This me, "Yeah, baby, and the rest"

They tried to make me go to rehab
But I said, "No, no, no"
Yes, I've been black
But when I come back, you'll know, know, know

I don't ever wanna drink again
I just, oh, I just need a friend
I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
Have everyone think I'm on the mend

And it's not just my pride
It's just 'til these tears have dried

They tried to make me go to rehab
I said, "No, no, no"
Yes, I've been black
But when I come back, you'll know, know, know
I ain't got the time
And if my daddy thinks I'm fine

He's tried to make me go to rehab
I won't go, go, go

Overall Meaning

In Amy Winehouse's song "Rehab," she tells the story of her addiction to alcohol and drugs. The lyrics make clear that although she knows she has a problem, she doesn't want to seek help or go to rehab to address it. She insists that she can learn all she needs to know from listening to the music of Donny Hathaway and that she'd rather spend time at home with her partner Ray than in rehab. She also suggests that her father doesn't understand the extent of her addiction and thinks she's fine.

The chorus of "They tried to make me go to rehab, but I said, 'No, no, no'" emphasizes the singer's resistance to getting help. She acknowledges that she has a problem, as evidenced by the line "Yes, I've been black," which could refer to her past struggles with addiction or her struggles as a black woman in the music industry. However, she insists that she doesn't have time for rehab and would rather address her issues on her own terms.

The song is a powerful commentary on addiction and the resistance many people feel towards seeking help. Winehouse's personal struggles with addiction and her reluctance to get help make the lyrics all the more poignant. Despite her resistance, the song's popularity and critical acclaim helped raise awareness of addiction and the importance of seeking help.

She opened the doors for Adele, Lana Del Rey, Birdy etc.. I cant explain how but she MADE something.

@rgblove4431

+Pink Pikachu Birdy Already had her doors open

@PromoDragon

+Pink Pikachu I learned it recently how from my media class, well for adele at least I can answer. She opened the doorway for female pop/rnb singers who don't look like the typical Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez type (Both physically and personality). She was literally a chick who sang an awesome song about how she likes her lifestyle of drugs and is not going to change it. People then thought oh wait if she looks like that and can sing like that then lets give these unconventional chicks like adele, lady gaga, etc a try.

@SimonK104

And Paloma Faith. She has a similar voice to Amy.
