A member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra during her youth, Winehouse signed to Simon Fuller's 19 Management in 2002 and soon recorded a number of songs before signing a publishing deal with EMI. She also formed a working relationship with producer Salaam Remi through these record publishers. Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released in 2003. Many of the album's songs were influenced by jazz and, apart from two covers, were co-written by Winehouse. Frank was a critical success in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. The song "Stronger Than Me" won her the Ivor Novello Award for Best Contemporary Song from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors.
Winehouse released her follow-up album, Back to Black, in 2006, which went on to become an international success and one of the best-selling albums in UK history. At the 2007 Brit Awards it was nominated for British Album of the Year, and she received the award for British Female Solo Artist. The song "Rehab" won her a second Ivor Novello Award. At the 50th Grammy Awards in 2008, she won five awards, tying the then record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and becoming the first British woman to win five Grammys, including three of the General Field "Big Four" Grammy Awards: Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year (for "Rehab"), as well as Best Pop Vocal Album.
Winehouse was plagued by drug and alcohol addiction. She died of alcohol poisoning on 23 July 2011, at the age of 27. After her death, Back to Black temporarily became the UK's best-selling album of the 21st century. VH1 ranked Winehouse 26th on their list of the 100 Greatest Women in Music.

Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine
He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go go go
I'd rather be at home with ray
I ain't got seventy days
'Cause there's nothing
That I can't learn from Mr. Hathaway
I didn't get a lot in class
But I know it don't come in a shot glass
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
(Now rocking with the best Amy baby)
The man said 'why do you think you here?'
I said 'I got no idea
I'm gonna, I'm gonna lose my baby
So I always keep a bottle near'
He said 'I just think your depressed',
(The best Amy Amy)
Kiss me, yeah baby, and go rest
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no' (Yes)
Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know
Young, uh
More money, more checks, I'm addicted to fresh
Six pair of kicks is my definition of 12 steps
Kick back in the back, get the phantom to drop
Bass blaring outta my system, that's how I detox
O when will he stop, he still pumping that real shit
My flow so dumb, my face is numb, nigga, I don't feel shit
Where's a therapist? Yeah, I'm outta control
They tryna make me go to rehab, I won't go, no
And so I'm addicted, I'm Britney, Whitney, and Bobby
Betty Ford ain't ready for us, ain't nothing can stop me
Oh look he's collapsing, just look how he's rapping
Every time I try to get out it pulls me back in
Amy should have rehabed him,'stead she doubled his ration
Can you blame me for being a slave to my passion?
My heroine flows more deeper than Marilyn's nose I'm an O.D.
'Til I'm in peace like Anna Nicole,
Hov!
I don't ever wanna drink again
I just ooh I just need a friend
I'm not gonna spend ten weeks
Have everyone think I'm on the mend
It's not just my pride
It's just 'til these tears have dried
They tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go go go
The song "Rehab" by Amy Winehouse ft. Jay-Z is about Amy's refusal to enter rehab despite her family's and others' efforts to get her to seek help for her alcohol addiction. The lyrics reflect Amy's feeling of being misunderstood and her perceived inability to be taught anything new about herself and her struggles. She argues that she can learn more from her own experiences and figure out her issues on her own, rather than being forced into a structured rehabilitation program. Throughout the song, she is confident in her decision to refuse rehab and even critiques the system that prescribes it as the solution for addiction.
The line, "Yes, I've been black, but when I come back you'll know, know, know" is a reference to her hiatus from music due to her addiction and the intense media scrutiny surrounding it. She's suggesting that once she returns, people will understand that she's still the talented artist they know and love regardless of her struggles.
Jay-Z's verse talks about his own addiction to wealth and fame, and compares it to Amy's addiction to alcohol. He expresses his concern for Amy's well-being and the fact that she's not getting the help she needs. He also critiques the rehab industry as a whole, suggesting that it's not enough to solve the complex issues of addiction and mental health.
Overall, "Rehab" is a powerful commentary on addiction, the stigma surrounding it, and the efficacy of traditional rehabilitation methods.
