Geordie
Anaïs Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As I walked out over London
On a misty morning early
I overheard a fair pretty maid
Crying for the life of her Geordie
“Saddle me a milk white steed
Bridle me a pony
I’ll ride down to London town
And I’ll beg for the life of my Geordie”
And when she came to the courthouse steps
The poor folks numbered many
A hundred crowns she passed around
Saying,“Pray for the life of my Geordie”
“He never stole a mule or a mare
He never murdered any
If he shot one of the king’s wild deer
It was only to feed his family”
And then she strode through the marble hall
Before the judge and the jury
Down on her bended knee she falls
Crying for the life of her Geordie
“He never stole, he never slew
He never murdered any
He never injured any of you
Spare me the life of my Geordie”
The judge looked over his left shoulder
He says, “I’m sorry for thee
My pretty fair maid, you’ve come to late
He’s been condemned already”
“But six pretty babes I had by him
The seventh one lies in my body
And I would bear them all over again
If you give me the life of my Geordie”
“Your Geordie will hang in a silver chain
Such as we don’t hang many
And he’ll be laid in a coffin brave
For your six fine sons to carry”
“I wish I had you in a public square
The whole town gathered around me

With my broad sword and a pistol too
I’d fight you for the life of my Geordie”

Overall Meaning

The song "Geordie" by Anaïs Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer is a narrative ballad that focuses on a woman who is fighting for the life of her lover, Geordie, who has been condemned to death for a crime he did not commit. The ballad begins with the woman walking through London on a misty morning, crying for Geordie's life. She promises to ride down to London town and beg for his life, even though she knows it might be futile. When she reaches the courthouse where Geordie is being held, she passes out a hundred crowns and pleads with the judge and jury to spare Geordie's life. She argues that he has never committed any serious crime and only shot one of the king's deer to feed his family.

The woman's desperation and love for Geordie are palpable throughout the song. She is willing to do anything to save him, even if it means begging for his life and passing out money to persuade people to spare him. However, in the end, her efforts are in vain, and Geordie is hanged. The woman is left with the memory of their love and the six children they had together, with a seventh on the way.

@thecourtlyalchemist

Lyrically this is my favorite version of this song. I think it has become what it was always meant to be.

I love this variation of child#209 you've arranged.  My new favorite song.  Anais you are breathtaking.

@karlbrowne6150

Exquisite performances, beautifully recorded.

@mandofidgit

Anais Mitchell is a great performer with a beautiful voice, but in my opinion Jefferson Hamer lifts her performances even higher. A rarely heard pairing of the male and female voice, redefining the term "joined from the hip".

@monologtube

chills throughout.

@Trollificusv2

This is most excellent. They couldn't sound anything but good, but the guitars are picked up so clean and bright it just drives an extra musicality to it that more instruments or fancier production would not. Voices are wonderful together, lyrics convey desperation and strength and Aniais Mitchell is...*ahem*...very appealing.

@tonysimons988

Wonderful. You must tour Australia.
