Ana Barbara would become a beauty queen before she reached stardom as a singer: in 1988, she became "Miss San Luis Potosí", going on to represent her state in the Miss Universe-sponsored Miss Mexico beauty contest. She lost in her bid to become Miss Mexico, however.
In 1993, Ana Bárbara was proclaimed the "Ambassador of Ranchera Music", and she also earned the Rostro Bonito de El Heraldo ("El Heraldo's Beautiful Face") award. In 1994, she signed with Televisa's musical company, Fonovisa. Under the Fonovisa label, she launched her first CD, the self-titled "Ana Bárbara". Her song, "Sacúdeme" ("Shake Me"), became a hit in Mexico.
Ana Bárbara reached international fame after the death of Mexican-American singer Selena in 1995. When Ana Bárbara's self-titled CD was released to Hispanic listeners in the United States, it was advertised on television as a dedicatory to Selena. A song also named "Selena" was added to the CD prior to its American release.
On November 3 of 2005, Ana Bárbara was awarded a Latin Grammy Award.

The song "Ay Amor" by Ana Bárbara captures the complex emotions associated with love. The lyrics reveal the confusion, longing, and pain that love can elicit. She also laments her inability to control love and make it her own. Throughout the song, she questions love's nature, proclaiming that it doesn't have feelings and exists solely to make people happy.
Despite her doubts and uncertainties, the singer can't help but yearn for love. She wishes she could own it and prevent it from leaving her. However, she also acknowledges the pain that love can bring and fears not recognizing it when it appears. The chorus of the song emphasizes the different ways love can manifest itself and the varying responses people have towards it. The singer questions whether it's better to love or to be loved, and whether it's possible to avoid getting hurt by love.
Overall, the song "Ay Amor" is a poignant reflection on the complexities of love. It captures the tension between wanting to experience the joy of love and the fear of being hurt, making it a relatable and emotionally resonant song.
