Marilyn Monroe nunca contesta
The song "Marilyn" by Ana Belen delves into the complex life and painful experiences of the iconic actress. The lyrics describe Marilyn Monroe's loneliness, her struggles with insomnia, and her feeling of being unable to connect with others. Despite being considered one of the most beautiful women in the world, Marilyn's inner turmoil is evident in the line "Marilyn Monroe se siente una idiota Porque de algunos libros no entiende ni jota" (Marilyn Monroe feels like an idiot because she doesn't understand some books at all). Her isolation is further explored with the line "cuando matan a su perro / Ya sabe que nadie la irá a buscar al colegio" (when her dog is killed, she knows that no one will come to pick her up from school). The song also alludes to the sexual abuse that Marilyn experienced, with references to a police officer and her uncle attempting to violate her.
The chorus of the song, "Marilyn Monroe que nunca logra dormir / A veces ni con píldoras lo puede conseguir" (Marilyn Monroe who can never sleep / sometimes can't even with pills), highlights her insomnia, a well-known aspect of her personal life that was often controversial. The lyrics show that despite her fame and beauty, Marilyn was not immune from the difficulties of life and mental health struggles. The song ends with a reference to Marilyn's untimely death and how her legacy has been exploited for commercial gain.
Overall, "Marilyn" is a poignant and insightful tribute to an iconic figure who is often reduced to a two-dimensional sex symbol rather than recognized for the complexities of her life and experiences.
