After seven Mecano albums and fame in Europe and Latin America, months of continuous touring were taking their toll on the band, especially on Ana who was starting to develop vocal problems. In 1993 the band announced a "temporary split". While José and Nacho composed solo albums, Ana chose to travel round the world to visit places like Hawaii, Bombay and New York, cities she had sung about while fronting Mecano. It was in New York that she set up home and took dance classes.
By 1997 Ana felt confident enough to sing again and moved to London to record her first solo album Puntos cardinales. The album marked a curious change for Ana, as her new songs were not written from a male point of view by the Cano brothers, she felt she could express herself in Spanish as a woman for the first time. The first single from the album A contratiempo was a Spanish cover of an old Bette Midler song, "Bottomless". The video showed a "new" Ana Torroja with plumper lips and other attributes hitherto unseen on the former Mecano star.
In 1998—partially due to the expense and commercial failure of José María's opera project—Mecano reformed for the double-disc greatest hits compilation Ana, José, Nacho, which also featured seven new songs.
In 2006, Ana released "Me Cuesta Tanto Olvidarte", an album which featured 13 of Mecano's greatest hits reborn. "Hijo de La Luna" was remade as a Huapango Jarocho, featuring a whole Mariachi ensemble. "Maquillaje" was given a burlesque, cabaret sound, while "Barco a Venus" was made a Rumba. Other hits included were "Los Amantes" (w/ a Samba makeover), "Mujer Contra Mujer" (in a solo orchestral rendition), "Busco Algo Barato", "Cruz De navajas," and "La Fuerza Del Destino." Amazingly, the title track is nowhere to be seen.

Llora, llora
Llorando todo el tiempo
Alma en tempestad
Alma de inocentes sueños
Nadie es dueño de sus sentimientos
Respira suave que el aliento te salve
Cuéntame tus miedos
Quiero ver si son más grandes
Que tus anhelos
Que el amor es ciego
Su corazón de libélula
Llora, llora
Llorando todo el tiempo
Alma en tempestad
Su corazón de libélula
Amar, amar
Amando en la distancia
Vuela sin llegar
Alma de sensuales gestos
Espirales son tus sentimientos
Llena de dudas sin respuesta ninguna
Llévame en tu vuelo
Quiero ser tu libertad, tu cielo
Y la eternidad
Vuela a ras de suelo
Quiero ser la luz de tu consuelo
Y tu realidad
Su corazón de libélula
Llora, llora
Llorando todo el tiempo
Alma en tempestad
Su corazón de libélula
Ama, ama
Amando en la distancia
Vuela sin llegar
Vuela sin llegar
Vuela sin llegar
Vuela sin llegar
The lyrics of Ana Torroja's song "Libélula" are full of metaphors and poetic expressions that revolve around the central theme of a heartbroken lover whose heart is compared to that of a dragonfly. In the opening lines of the song, Torroja sings about a dragonfly's heart that cries incessantly and is in turmoil, suggesting that the person being addressed is in a state of emotional distress. The phrase "alma en tempestad" (tempestuous soul) reinforces this idea, emphasizing the intensity of the pain and the inner turmoil that the person is experiencing.
The second verse of the song takes a more philosophical turn, reflecting on the human condition of being at the mercy of our emotions and striving to find a sense of meaning and purpose in life. The lines "nadie es dueño de sus sentimientos" (no one owns their feelings) and "cuéntame tus miedos" (tell me your fears) suggest a desire to connect with the person being addressed and to help them find some comfort and relief from their suffering.
The chorus of the song repeats the imagery of the dragonfly's heart crying and flying without reaching its destination, suggesting that the person being addressed is still searching for love and fulfillment but has not yet found it. The final verse of the song offers a glimmer of hope, with the lines "quiero ser tu libertad, tu cielo, y la eternidad" (I want to be your freedom, your sky, and eternity) suggesting that there may yet be a possibility of finding happiness and inner peace.
Overall, "Libélula" is a deeply emotional song that conveys a strong sense of empathy and understanding for those who are struggling with matters of the heart. Through its powerful imagery and beautiful melodies, the song offers a message of hope and comfort to all those who may be feeling lost or alone in their emotional journeys.
