Tower of Babel
Anathallo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
to knowing nothing.
We came around without even our names.
We came around again
to knowing nothing.
Whatever thing that it was,
we were trying to build it up.
By God it was crushed.
We came around again
to knowing nothing.
We came around without even our names.
We came around again
to knowing nothing.
We came around again
to knowing nothing.
We came around without even our names.
We came around again,
our tongues scattered and confused in that way.
Cut your foot.
Let the grass dip in to clean it.
Keep your wounds clean and sour.
In Anathallo's song Tower of Babel, the lyrics explore the concept of an ancient tower that was believed to have been built by humans in an effort to reach the heavens. However, this tower was ultimately destroyed by a higher power, for attempting to reach a level of height that was not meant for mortal beings. The lyrics speak to the idea of returning to a state of ignorance, of not knowing anything, as a way to reset and start anew after a failed endeavor.
The singer of the song admits to having their identity stripped away - they are nameless, clueless and lost. They had attempted to build something great, something that could reach the sky, but they failed. God has put an end to their ambitious plans and their pride. They are left with nothing but their wounds and confusion.
In the final lines, the lyrics encourage the listener to take care of their physical wounds as a metaphor for emotional healing. The image of cutting one's foot suggests the pain of being brought back down to earth, but the need to keep moving forward despite the pain. The grass represents the healing process, a symbol of rejuvenation and regrowth.
