A Whisper & a Clamor
Anberlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Growing tired of bedside resolve
Politics, lay out the pressure
Something's got to give now
Something's going to break down

I grow tired of writing songs
While people listen but never hear
What's really going on now
Tell me, what's so wrong now?

Clap your hands, all ye children
There's a clamor in your whispering
Clap your hands tonight
Hear what the silence screams

Clap your hands
Clap your hands now, all ye children
Clap your hands, all ye children
There's a clamor in your whispering tonight

For most of men that believe
Hell is never knowing who they are now
Tell me who you are now

Finally saved from the outside
Trapped in what you know
Are you safe from yourself?
Can you escape all by yourself?

Clap your hands, all ye children
There's a clamor in your whispering
Clap your hands tonight
Hear what the silence screams

Clap your hands
Clap your hands now, all ye children
Clap your hands, all ye children
There's a clamor in your whispering tonight

Clap your hands
Clap your hands now, all ye children
Clap your hands
There's a clamor in your whispering tonight

It's not the lives that you save
But what the silence will scream
It's not the lives that you save
But what the silence will scream
It's not the lives that you save
But what the silence will scream

Clap your hands, all ye children
There's a clamor in your whispering
Clap your hands tonight
Hear what the silence screams

Clap your hands
Clap your hands now, all ye children

Clap your hands, all ye children
There's a clamor in your whispering tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Anberlin's song "A Whisper & a Clamor" speak about the struggle to make a difference, to be heard, and to find oneself in the midst of chaos. The first verse reflects on the exhaustion of dealing with politics and the pressure that comes with it, while also critiquing the passive consumption of art and music. The line "What's really going on now, tell me, what's so wrong now?" addresses the apathy that often operates as a barrier to change.

The chorus, which calls for the children to clap their hands, has a dual meaning. On one level, it is a call to action, asking the younger generation to stand up and demand change. On another level, it acknowledges the naivete and innocence that the younger generation can bring to issues and serves as a reminder that change requires a kind of childlike faith and belief in the power of action. The line "There's a clamor in your whispering tonight" speaks to the necessity of raising our voices and making noise in order to be heard.

The second verse deals with the struggle of knowing oneself and finding one's identity in the midst of societal pressure. The lines "Finally saved from the outside, trapped in what you know, are you safe from yourself, can you escape all by yourself?" speak to the struggle of reconciling who we are with who we feel we should be.

In summary, the lyrics of "A Whisper and a Clamor" call for action in the face of apathy and challenge the listener to find their own voice and identity amidst the noise and chaos of the world.

It sucks that most people skip past this song just because they can't bother spending two minutes thinking about the deeper meaning, much like some of their other songs

As a small child my father would put this on while we were driving and now I only see him about once every two months due to family complications. This song brings me back to simpler times where none of that was going on.

yeah i would turn off all of the other songs in that game and only leave this song on so it would repeat all the time. i never got tired of it
