Inevitable
Anberlin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Do you remember when we were just kids
And cardboard boxes took us miles from what we would miss?
School yard conversations taken to heart
And laughter took the place of everything we knew we were not

I want to break every clock
The hands of time could never move again
We could stay in this moment for the rest of our lives
Is it over now, hey, hey, is it over now?

I want to be your last first kiss that you'll ever have
I want to be your last first kiss

Amazing how life turns out the way that it does
We end up hurting the worst, the only ones we really love

I want to break every clock
The hands of time could never move again
We could stay in this moment for the rest of our lives
Is it over now, hey, hey, is it over now?

I want to be your last first kiss that you'll ever have
I want to be your last first kiss

Is it over now, hey, hey, is it over now?
Is it over now? Hey, hey, it's not over now

I want to be your last first kiss that you'll ever have
I want to be your last first love that you'll ever have

Lying here beside me, palms and eyes open wide
I want to be your last first kiss for all time

Overall Meaning

The song "Inevitable" by Anberlin is a nostalgic song about the memories and experiences that people have when they were still kids. The first verse talks about the simplicity of life and how the most trivial things such as cardboard boxes could take them miles away from their reality. The second verse reflects on how life has turned out and how the ones we love are often the ones who hurt us the most. Despite this, the singer expresses his desire to stay in the present moment forever and be his lover's last first love and first kiss, for all time.

The chorus, "I want to break every clock, the hands of time could never move again" is a metaphor for the desire to stop time and retain the moment of happiness forever. The singer doesn't want the current moment to end, even if it means breaking time itself. The bridge, "Lying here beside me, palms and eyes open wide" shows the vulnerability and openness of the singer to his lover. He wants to create a moment that would last a lifetime.

This song was our first dance at our wedding. when was diagnosed with cancer, so we decided to move up our wedding date from June 2011 to November 2010. Today is our 2 year wedding anniversary and he died in March 2011. I miss him so much, but this song was so perfect for our first dance.

Ill share this here;
This was one of my favorite songs by Anberlin. I contacted Stephen and got them along for the ride in one of the most memorable experiences of my life. We set up a secret 'meeting' with the band. My then girlfriend, (whom was one of the biggest Anberlin fans I know) had no idea what was going on. We got the whole venue to ourselves and had this song sang for us with a twist on the lyrics designed specifically for us. I then got down on one knee and proposed to the love of my life by asking "will you be my last first kiss". I slipped the ring on her finger. These guys are amazing. They became a part of us for all time.
