shine On
Anders Johansson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You stare at the wall and answer polite
We talk about past and how we were right
I call for the waiter and I catch your eye
The makeup tells your cry
A bottle of red and tissues to go
We haul in a taxi and before I know
You tell me your story and all I can say
Is love will come your way

(Chorus)
Shine on
After the pain of love has gone
You'll find the will to carry on
As long as you keep your dream alive
Somehow I know you will shine on
Light up the sky, eclipse the sun
You know the best is yet to come
Even if no one's by your side
Somehow I know you will shine on

We drive through the night and don't care about
The meter is running and the lights are gone out
You tell me that lonely is being alone
And you're not going home
The touch of your hand says way more than words
We just made it home when you gave me your world
Blessed by the fire, warm by the flame
I know you felt the same

(Chorus)
Shine on
After the pain of love has gone
You'll find the will to carry on
As long as you keep your dream alive
Somehow I know you will shine on
Light up the sky, eclipse the sun
You know the best is yet to come
Even if no one's by your side
Somehow I know you will shine on

With no regrets, no questions why
Without a need to say goodbye
To lonely ones' search for one to
Show us how to

(Chorus)
Shine on
After the pain of love has gone
You'll find the will to carry on
As long as you keep your dream alive
Somehow I know you will shine on
Light up the sky, eclipse the sun
You know the best is yet to come
Even if no one's by your side
Somehow I know you will shine on

Shine on, shine on, shine on
Shine on, shine on, shine on

As long as you keep your dream alive
Somehow I know you will shine on

Overall Meaning

The verses of Anders Johansson's "Shine On" tell a story of two people meeting and having a heartfelt conversation about their past and present struggles. The line "The makeup tells your cry" suggests the woman has been crying, and the tissues and bottle of red wine they order hint at her recent pain. However, the singer encourages her to find hope in love and to keep her dream alive. The chorus is an uplifting repetition of the title, encouraging her to shine on even though the pain of love has gone.

The second verse sees the two of them continuing their conversation as they drive through the night. The metaphors of "the meter is running and the lights are gone out" suggest that they are leaving their troubles behind and ready to face the future. The singer tells us that the woman's touch speaks louder than words and that they both experience a moment of passion as they "just made it home." The final verse encourages us to keep our dreams alive, without regrets or questions, and to show others how to do the same.

Interestingly, "Shine On" is a song with a long history. Swedish singer/songwriter Jan Sparring wrote the original version in the 1980s. He gave the song to his friend Benny Andersson, a member of Abba, who recorded it in Swedish in 1987. Anders Johansson later recorded his own version of the song with English lyrics, which appears on his 2009 album "The Way to Rock."
