His first big hit was Eenzame Kerst ("Lonely Christmas"). In 1979 he signed a contract with EMI, and soon after that his career started to take off. Een Vriend ("A Friend") and Een Beetje Verliefd ("A Little Bit In Love)" were both top ten hits of his.
On september 23, 2004 André Hazes was struck by a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. Four days later a ceremony was held in the Amsterdam Arena where ten thousands of fans paid respect to one of the most popular Dutch singers of the late 20th century. The next day his last single Zij gelooft in mij ("She believes in me") became number one in the Dutch charts.

The lyrics of André Hazes's song "Donker om je heen" narrate a heartbroken man who is questioning a woman who lied to him consistently. At the beginning of the song, he reveals that the woman's number was not listed in the phone book, and the address she gave him was false, which prompts him to ask her why she lies to him when he never did the same. The man then recalls how he always kept the door open for her, protected her from the cold, and allowed her to sleep in his bed, even if he slept in a chair. However, the woman remained emotionally distant and unresponsive, leaving him confused and hurt.
The lyrics suggest that the man is in a state of despair, as he repeatedly asks why there is so much darkness around the woman. He also questions why joy and happiness are no longer rewarded and laments how the woman left him alone after such a short period of time. Despite his efforts to make her open up and communicate with him, she remained distant and ultimately left him without any explanation. The song ends with him still searching for answers and wondering why he was left in the dark, with his happiness and heartbreak in equal measure.
