His first big hit was Eenzame Kerst ("Lonely Christmas"). In 1979 he signed a contract with EMI, and soon after that his career started to take off. Een Vriend ("A Friend") and Een Beetje Verliefd ("A Little Bit In Love)" were both top ten hits of his.
On september 23, 2004 André Hazes was struck by a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. Four days later a ceremony was held in the Amsterdam Arena where ten thousands of fans paid respect to one of the most popular Dutch singers of the late 20th century. The next day his last single Zij gelooft in mij ("She believes in me") became number one in the Dutch charts.

The lyrics to "Had Toch Maar Ja Gezegd" by Andre Hazes are about a man who is in love with a woman who is in a relationship with someone else. He is frustrated by the situation and wishes that she had chosen to be with him instead. He is aware that what they are doing is not right and it is making him go crazy. He is forced to wait until her boyfriend is gone before he can see her, and he is tired of the hiding and sneaking around. He wishes that she had chosen to be with him when he asked her to but she didn't because she thought he was too free-spirited.
The chorus of the song is a lamentation of the missed opportunity for them to be together. The singer had hoped that they could share everything and be together for the long haul but now he is forced to content himself with fleeting visits under the cover of darkness. He is hurt that she chose to be with someone else who is not like him, and he wonders why she did not choose him when he was ready to commit. The song is a representation of the pain and regret that come from lost love, and the longing for what could have been.
