His first big hit was Eenzame Kerst ("Lonely Christmas"). In 1979 he signed a contract with EMI, and soon after that his career started to take off. Een Vriend ("A Friend") and Een Beetje Verliefd ("A Little Bit In Love)" were both top ten hits of his.
On september 23, 2004 André Hazes was struck by a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. Four days later a ceremony was held in the Amsterdam Arena where ten thousands of fans paid respect to one of the most popular Dutch singers of the late 20th century. The next day his last single Zij gelooft in mij ("She believes in me") became number one in the Dutch charts.

Hoogste tijd
Nee Cor niet doen nou
Hoogste tijd
Nee jaap het biljart is dicht
We gaan niet biljarten vanavond meer Jaap
Over, sluiten Jaap
Hoogste tijd
Weet je wat, ik ga naar huis. Je bekijkt het maar...
The song "Hoogste Tijd" by André Hazes talks about the end of a night out and the closing of a bar or pub. The clock strikes and it’s time to go home; the last round has been called, and the bartender wants to close down. He encourages the patrons to finish their drinks and go home, even if they may not want to leave. The bartender reminds them there’s still someone waiting for them at home. This "someone" could be a spouse, a child or a friend, emphasising the importance of being there for the people who matter most.
The song also highlights the significance of the end of a night out, when it is time to go home and rest after a long night of partying. The bartender is the voice of reason in the song, guiding the patrons to leave and emphasising the idea that it is the right thing to do. The patrons are reluctant to leave, but the bartender reminds them of their responsibilities at home. The phrase "Hoogste Tijd" means "High Time," which reinforces the message of the song’s message to go home.
