His first big hit was Eenzame Kerst ("Lonely Christmas"). In 1979 he signed a contract with EMI, and soon after that his career started to take off. Een Vriend ("A Friend") and Een Beetje Verliefd ("A Little Bit In Love)" were both top ten hits of his.
On september 23, 2004 André Hazes was struck by a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. Four days later a ceremony was held in the Amsterdam Arena where ten thousands of fans paid respect to one of the most popular Dutch singers of the late 20th century. The next day his last single Zij gelooft in mij ("She believes in me") became number one in the Dutch charts.

The lyrics in Andre Hazes's song Ik Blijf Toch Komen tells the story of the singer's infatuation with a woman who lives on the same street where he used to live. The streetlights at night, bring memories of her to him and he finds himself continuously returning to the neighborhood to see her, even though the woman has moved on with her life. Though her eyes no longer show love for him, she is still kind to others, although only when they pay her. The woman's eyes no longer shine with love for the singer, and she seems to have given up any love that she had for him in exchange for material things.
The chorus questions why the woman chose to leave the singer when they could have had everything together. It also reveals that the singer still has feelings for her and is willing to forgive her for what she has done. The last verse speaks of the singer's endless fascination with the woman, and how in the end he is torturing himself. The song conveys the feeling of longing and unfulfilled promises that are common to those who have been rejected but still in love with someone.
