His first big hit was Eenzame Kerst ("Lonely Christmas"). In 1979 he signed a contract with EMI, and soon after that his career started to take off. Een Vriend ("A Friend") and Een Beetje Verliefd ("A Little Bit In Love)" were both top ten hits of his.
On september 23, 2004 André Hazes was struck by a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. Four days later a ceremony was held in the Amsterdam Arena where ten thousands of fans paid respect to one of the most popular Dutch singers of the late 20th century. The next day his last single Zij gelooft in mij ("She believes in me") became number one in the Dutch charts.

In André Hazes's song Kleine Jongen, the singer expresses his wisdom and advice to a young boy, probably his son. He acknowledges that life is not easy, and everyone must fight to survive. The song implicitly suggests that hardship is a part of life, and it can come at any moment. André advises the boy to remember that there may be bad people, but there are more good people in the world. However, honesty is the key that will yield the longest-lasting reward. André also advises the young boy to live his life to the fullest since it is short. He should be happy and do what he loves but do it responsibly. Finally, he tells the boy that he'll grow up and possibly have children of his own. When that time comes, he should pass along the advice that his father gave him.
The song contains a universal message of perseverance, resilience, and optimism. It is a wise father's advice to his son on how to navigate life's ups and downs. Although the song is relatable to all, it became popular because André Hazes was a Dutch icon, and his tragic story resonated with many people. André Hazes was raised by his grandmother in a working-class area of Amsterdam. He sold fish and played music on the streets to support himself. He became one of the most famous Dutch singers and had a reputation for his emotional intensity and sincerity. André died in 2004 at the age of 53, and his fatherly wisdom has made Kleine Jongen a classic song in the Netherlands.

Hey little boy,

You're born into this world, so you'll have to fight just like I did
Ik kan het weten
I know it well
Het leven is niet makkelijk
Life is not easy
Er is tegenspoed op ieder ogenblik
There's adversity at every moment
Er zijn veel goede mensen
There are many good people
But unfortunately there are bad people too, it's true
Je moet maar denken
You just have to think
Dat jij straks gaat beseffen
That you'll realize later on
That honesty lasts the longest, believe me
Dit leven gaat voorbij
This life will pass
There's already little time, so live, because you're free
But do it wisely, make people happy
Dan zul je echt gelukkig zijn
Then you'll truly be happy
Want het leven is zo kort
Because life is so short
Many things change as you grow older
You're still playing with blocks, but that won't last long
It's too bad but you won't stay little
Even in school, you'll notice that everything revolves around grades and power
Zo is het leven
That's life
Dus leer wat je moet leren
So learn what you need to
Because then you'll be the one who laughs last
Als jij dan later groot bent
When you're all grown up
Your father may not be there anymore
Tell your own children the wise lessons of your old man

I found an English translation online
Little Boy
[My] little boy,
You're on this world so you'll have to fight like me
I can know it
Life isn't always easy,
There are obstacles at every moment.
[My] little boy,
There are many good people,
But bad ones exist too, it's a pity it's true
But you have to think;
That soon you'll realise
That honesty wins from lies
Refrain
This life goes so fast
There is so little time, so life, you're free
But be wise and make the people happy
Then you'll be truly happy
Because life's so short
Many things will change once you get older
You still play with LEGO, but that'll soon change!
It's a pity, but you won't stay small
[My] little boy,
At school you'll notice it's all about grades and power
It's life
So learn what you have to
And then you'll be the one who has the last laugh
[My] little boy,
And once you're grown
Then maybe your father isn't anymore
Then tell your children this story from your old man
