His first big hit was Eenzame Kerst ("Lonely Christmas"). In 1979 he signed a contract with EMI, and soon after that his career started to take off. Een Vriend ("A Friend") and Een Beetje Verliefd ("A Little Bit In Love)" were both top ten hits of his.
On september 23, 2004 André Hazes was struck by a cardiac arrest which resulted in his death. Four days later a ceremony was held in the Amsterdam Arena where ten thousands of fans paid respect to one of the most popular Dutch singers of the late 20th century. The next day his last single Zij gelooft in mij ("She believes in me") became number one in the Dutch charts.

André Hazes's song "Sleur" talks about a man who is content living his life in his own unique way. He doesn't want his life to change because that wouldn't bring him any happiness. He says that he is as free as a bird and that's how he wants to live his life. He admits that he should have told his loved one this, but now it's too late because he cannot turn back the clock. He sings that he'll continue to live his life just the way he wants, no matter what others say about him.
Through the lyrics, we get a sense of how the man doesn't want to be trapped in a monotonous routine. He refers to the mundane act of drinking coffee and watching TV, even mentioning how his lover complains of headaches. He finds this lifestyle unappealing and doesn't want to live that way. Hazes's emotive delivery gives the lyrics an added depth as we can feel the man’s conviction to live his own life.
