The Rose
André Rieu; Johann Strauss Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

'Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone.
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone.
No flow'r of her kindred,
No rosebud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes
Or give sigh for sigh.

I'll not leave thee thou lone one
To pine on the stem,
Since the lovely are sleeping
Go sleep thou with them;
Thus kindly I scatter
Thy leaves o'er the bed,
Where thy mates of the garden
Lie scentless and dead.

So soon may I follow
When friendships decay,
And from loves' shining circle
The gems drop away!
When true hearts lie withered
And fond ones are flown

Oh! Who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?

Overall Meaning

André Rieu's song "The Last Rose" is a romantic ballad that tells the tale of a lone rose blooming among all her companions who have wilted and faded away, and how she longs for someone to share her beauty and fragrance with. The lyrics are melancholic in tone and evoke a sense of longing and solitude that is often associated with unrequited love or loss of a loved one. The first verse talks about how the last rose of summer is left alone, with no companions to share her beauty with. The second verse talks about how the singer wants to take the rose and put it to rest with its dead companions. The final verse is about how the singer wishes not to be alone and wants to follow his companions when they have passed away.

The song "The Last Rose" has been a popular tune for centuries, with various interpretations by different artists. The song is often used in funeral processions or other somber occasions. Despite its melancholic tone, the song is a reminder to cherish life and the people we have around us while we are still alive.

Some say love, it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love, it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed
Some say love, it is a hunger
An endless aching need

I say love, it is a flower
And you it's only seed
It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the sould afraid of dyin'
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been to long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed that with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose

Mum was so excited to be going to an Andre Rieu concert. It got cancelled due to covid and sadly she died before it had been rescheduled. We played The Rose and The Second Waltz at her funeral.

I have chosen this piece for my dad for his funeral in 2 days time. Just a few weeks ago he watched an Andre Rieu concert at the cinema and loved it. His last cinema visit. Two weeks ago he left this earth of his own choice. This is a fitting tribute to my wonderful dad.
