Me dejaron bien plantado
Les pedí fuego y del bolsillo
Saqué una rama pa' convidarlos
Y abajo un arbol del otoño
Nos quedamos chamullando
Me contaron de sus vidas
Su triunfos y sus fracasos
De que el mundo andaba loco
Y hasta el cielo fue comprado
Y más miedo que ellos dos
Me daba el propio ser humano
Oh, oh, oh, oh...
Y yo ya no esperaba a nadie
Entre las brisas del aquellarre
El diablo y la muerte
Se me fueron amigando
Ahí donde dobla el viento
Y se cruzan los atajos
Ahí donde brilla la vida
En la esquina de mi barrio

De mi barrio...
De mi barrio...

Overall Meaning

This song, La balada del diablo y la muerte, begins by describing a scene in which the devil is standing at a street corner in the singer's neighborhood. Next to him is Death, holding a bottle of what can be assumed to be alcohol. The two figures are casting sideways glances at the singer and laughing quietly to themselves. The singer, waiting for someone on the other side of the street, hears Death whispering that she wonders how many people she's missed catching, using the analogy of a mouse escaping a trap. Death also mentions that the two of them could easily capture a lamb from across the street. The singer hides behind some fog and reflects on how he's been left waiting for someone who wasn't going to arrive. When he emerges from his hiding spot and approaches the devil and Death, he is trembling. However, he manages to strike up a conversation with them, sharing a cigarette and a rambling late-night conversation with the two figures. They discuss their lives and the state of the world, and the singer reflects on how both the devil and Death and the actions of human beings inspire fear in him. Despite this, the song closes with a sense of unexpected camaraderie between the singer and the two figures, as they disappear into the night together.
