I don't know why
Andraé Crouch Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't know why Jesus loved me
I don't know why He cared
I don't know why He sacrificed His life
Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did

He left His mighty throne in glory
To bring to us redemption's story
Then He died but He rose again
Just for you and me
Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did.

He left His mighty throne in glory
To bring to us redemption's story
Then He died but He rose again
Just for you and me
Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did.

Where would I be if Jesus didn't love me?
Where would I be if Jesus didn't care?
Where would I be if He hadn't sacrificed His life
Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did

I don't know why Jesus loved me
(Oh I don't know why)
I don't know why He cared
(Oh I don't know why)
I don't know why He sacrificed His life

Oh, but I'm glad (so glad), so glad He did
Oh, but I'm glad (so glad), so glad He did

Overall Meaning

The first stanza of Andraé Crouch's song 'I Don't Know Why' expresses the artist's bewilderment at the love and care offered by Jesus. The singer acknowledges the mystery of why Jesus would make the ultimate sacrifice of his life for the rest of humanity, especially considering that we are fallible creatures who continually sin. However, despite the singer's inability to fathom the reasons behind Jesus's actions, they are grateful for His love and sacrifice.

The second stanza seeks to explain the mechanism behind Jesus's love and sacrifice. Jesus, who was divine in nature, gave up his rightful place on "His mighty throne in glory" to redeem mankind. By dying and then being resurrected from the dead, Jesus made it possible for humanity to find redemption and forgiveness from their sins. Through Jesus's substitutionary death, the singer of the song recognizes the importance of His sacrifice in their own personal salvation.

The final three lines of the song, punctuated by the phrase "Oh, but I'm glad, so glad He did," serve as a celebratory exclamation of gratitude for Jesus's love and sacrifice. Despite the artist's confusion as to why Jesus would do what He did, the singer unequivocally asserts that they are glad that He did it.

I was part of the Jesus People Movement in Canton, Ohio in 1971-72…and Our Pastor bought an old house near the church and it was aptly given the name the Shepherd’s Inn. Many, many “hippies” and those seeking the “truth”came to find Him at this Inn and at our church, Trinity Gospel Temple where Pastor Brother Dave Lombardi and his beautiful wife, Sister Meralene made us all feel welcome and we formed a beautiful family. That movement, Canton, Ohio and many details are chronicled in Wikipedia….along with many photos. We played Andre’s greatest hits album all the time there…this music is as strongly associated with those years as any music we heard on the radio. We had wonderful night long Bible studies and witnessed for Jesus every chance we had. I later got married and had a happy long marriage and three wonderful sons. I am now a widow of 16 years, but I still attend that church and we still sing Andre’s and also Nancy Harmony’s songs from time to time…because that is the music that made those conversions and that beautiful time of our lives so sweet and precious. Both Andre and Nancy performed at Trinity, also. I was not there to see them, but I know it had to be wonderful! This is my way of going back one more time and living those beautiful times again. The Lord is very real and He was right there with us more than we can even say. I’m so grateful to still be His follower. He is truly the Lord and I love Him. I know Andre is up there singing with Him right now. Praise the Lord !
