Take Me Back
Andraé Crouch and the Disciples Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chorus:
Take me back, take me back dear Lord
To the place where I first believed you.
Take me back, take me back dear Lord where I
first believe.

I feel that I'm so far from you Lord
But still I hear you calling me
Those simple things that I once knew,
The memories are drawing me.
I must confess, Lord I've been blessed
But yet my soul's not satisfied.
Renew my faith, restore my joy
And dry my weeping eyes.

Chorus

Bridge:
I tried so hard
To make it all alone
I need your help
Just to make it home.

Chorus

Overall Meaning

The song 'Take Me Back' by Andraé Crouch and the Disciples is a reflective piece that seeks to rekindle the deep relationship with God that was once cherished. The chorus of the song presents a heartfelt desire to go back to the initial point of faith, where everything began. The plea to "take me back dear Lord, to the place where I first believed you," is the central message of the song. The singer confesses feeling distant from God despite persistent calling. The memories of that initial connection with God are still strong and draw the singer back.

In the verse, the singer talks about how he has been blessed in so many ways, but his soul is not satisfied. He expresses his desire to renew his faith, restore his joy, and dry his weeping eyes. This shows how the singer is seeking comfort and hope from God, who is the only one capable of providing a renewed sense of peace and joy. The bridge speaks of how the singer has tried so hard to make it on his own, but he realizes he needs God's help to make it home. It is a vulnerable admission that he cannot do it all on his own, and he needs God's intervention.

I fell in love with this song in 2005 some 14 years ago, and it still is as powerful today, as it was back then.

"If Heaven Was Never Promised to Me" lyrics . . . You may ask me why I serve the Lord,
Is it just for heaven's gain.
Or to walk those mighty streets of gold,
And to hear the angels sing.

Is it just to drink from the fountain,
That never shall run dry.
Or just to live forever, ever, and ever,
In that sweet, sweet bye and bye.

Chorus:
But if heaven never was promised to me, Neither God's promise to live eternally.
It's been worth just having the Lord in my life.
Living in a world of darkness,
You came along and brought me the light.

If there were never any streets of gold,
Neither a land where we'll never grow old,
It's been worth just having the Lord in my life.
You've been my closest friend down through the years,
And every time I cry You dry my tears.

It's been worth just having the Lord in my life.
Living in a world of darkness,
living in a world of darkness,
You came along and brought me the light.

This song takes me back to when I got baptized at 12 years old. I didn't always do right. God had mercy on me and kept me. I'm now 46, and I'm do my best to live for him, for the rest of my days.

Its March 17, 2023 at 11:13PM EST. The Lord took me to my dreams diary....because i felt lil distance from him. After reading the Lord took me to Jeremiah 33:1-...3. And God me reminded of this song...Here I am listening and crying to my daddy to have mercy on me and restore back all the spiritual gifts he had given me when we first met. I NEED YOU LORD...I MISS YOU SO MUCH HOLY SPIRIT.

Soon as I heard the intro, my mind took me back to my childhood at church. All those who are now gone, but really knew the meaning of old holiness.
