Come Thou Fount Of Every Blessing
Andrea Thomas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
tune my heart to sing thy grace;
streams of mercy, never ceasing,
call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I'm fixed upon it,
mount of thy redeeming love.

Here I raise mine Ebenezer;
hither by thy help I'm come;
and I hope, by thy good pleasure,
safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
wandering from the fold of God;
he, to rescue me from danger,
interposed his precious blood.

O to grace how great a debtor
daily I'm constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
prone to leave the God I love;

here's my heart, O take and seal it,
seal it for thy courts above.

Overall Meaning

The hymn "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing" by Robert Robinson is a heartfelt plea to God, asking Him to tune the writer's heart to sing His grace. The first verse exalts God for His never-ending mercy that calls for songs of highest praise. The second verse recounts the writer's personal journey with Christ seeking and finding him when he was a stranger and wandering away from God's fold. It is only through Jesus's precious blood that He was rescued from danger. The final verse is an acknowledgement that the writer is a prisoner to grace, and he only hopes that God's goodness will bind his wandering heart closer to Him. He acknowledges that he is prone to wander away from the God he loves, but he submits his heart to God's will and desires that God will seal his heart for His courts above.

The writer of this hymn, Robert Robinson, was born in England in 1735. He lived a very colorful life and, despite being raised in a religious home, he fell into a life of crime as a teenager. After a "deep conviction of sin," he became a Christian and became a Methodist preacher in England. This hymn was written in 1758 after a powerful message on "Prone to Wander" which, according to some accounts, was given by George Whitfield.
